In the past, new chokeberry seedlings were obtained by sowing seeds. Today, this method is rarely used because the shrubs that have grown up are not uniform in both growth and fruiting. The shrubs start fruiting a little later.A much simpler way to obtain more chokeberry bushes is to propagate it by cuttings.
In summer (from July to the beginning of September), pick semi-woody cuttings from the bushes. They are young, because they have grown this year, shoots that are already starting to become lignified. We recognize them by the fact that the lower part of the shoot turns from green to brown, and the tip is still very delicate.Hence their name - semi-woody cuttings.Side shoots that have not yet bear fruit are the best.
The seedlings can be of various sizes, but ideally they should be about 20-30 centimeters long. Procedure: cut the thicker part under the knot and remove the lower leaves. You can also trim the non-woody top, because it often withers. If the shoot cut off from the bush is long, you can even make several cuttings from it by cutting it into shorter lengths.
Aronia cuttings take root exceptionally easily, yet it is worth immersing their lower part in a rooting agent. The seedlings prepared in this way are planted directly into the ground. You can plant them quite densely, but so that they do not touch each other.By planting at greater distances, we will avoid replanting the bushes when they grow a bit.
Spring multiplication of chokeberry
About 1/3 of the seedling should be buried in the ground. In the initial period of rooting, the cuttings must be protected from strong sun and, importantly, constantly moist in the substrate.By winter, young plants should already sprout and in the next season the chokeberry will start growing on its own.
