Advice: pruning to ensure flowering in wisteria

Table of contents

Chinese wisteria Visteria sinensis and flowering Visteria floribunda are very vigorous climbers, so they should wrap around strong and stable supports. It is very important to cut these plants in August and September. It consists in trimming young, long growths over 2-4 buds.

Their strong shortening will contribute to the formation of flower buds on the left buds. This treatment also weakens the growth and forces the plants to enter the generative phase in the next season, i.e. in spring, when these beautiful climbers are blooming. It is especially important to make this cut on shrubs that have not yet bloomed or whose flowering is uneven and does not repeat annually in spring.

Remember that Chinese wisteria grows best in sunny places, necessarily secluded and sheltered from drying, frosty winds. In August, it is best to fertilize it with potassium fertilizer to prepare it for a good wintering.
