Delicate peony

Table of contents

Extremely decorative delicate Peony Paeonia tenuifolia comes from the sunny, dry meadows of the Caucasus, Asia Minor and Southern Europe. It is rarely found in our gardens.

HabitThe delicate peony is a unique plant. It has narrow, feathery leaves that resemble dill. Dark red, multi-petaled flowers already appear in May. They have tiny yellow anthers inside.

Site and substrateThe delicate peony likes light, well-drained, fertile and warm soil - it also prefers full sun. The soil should be well drained and moist. The plant also tolerates light partial shade, but blooms less then.

CompositionsIn the garden, a delicate peony looks good both when planted individually and in compositions with other flowers. It grows up from 30 to 50 cm. It also looks impressive in rock gardens, in terraced flower beds, planted next to large boulders or in combination with other, rather low plants that serve as its background.

Propagation of peoniesDelicate peony is propagated by sowing seeds directly into the ground or by dividing the tubers. If we already have it, let's treat it as a valuable asset. Delicate peony is a really rare perennial, difficult to get, but it can beautifully repay its exceptional beauty with flowers.

My adventure with this plant began 5-6 years ago. I received the first one as a gift and since then it grows and blooms on my plot without any problems. However, I would like to add that I stick to the guidelines for soil and position. For the winter, I cut the stalks of the delicate peony and cover the remainder with the sprigs of tunic, which is enough for its wintering.
