PiO: replanting perennial fir and caring for thuja

Table of contents

P:We are setting up a garden with my wife. Last fall, I planted a 15-year-old Korean fir in a depression filled with peat soil. In the spring, the fir established itself, sprouting new growths at the ends of the branches. For several weeks, I have been observing the browning of pine needles on some branches. These are not the needles from this year's increments that remain green all the time. I must admit that recently I watered my fir quite abundantly (already in June, when the heat set in). Could I overdo my watering and make my roots rot?

O:If you want to overdo itteenage trees , there are some rules to follow. In early spring, one year before the planned transplantation, the selected tree must be dug up at the border ofprojection crownonto the ground, cutting off some of the roots. The resulting groove can besprinkled peatFor a year the tree will rebuild a lot ofroots hair, with which it will bind the root ball, and besides, it will be better adopted in a new place.

In the spring(March) of the following year, the rest of the roots are cut off and, after securing thelump rootwith a jute bag or other material, the tree is transported to a new place, where a dug hole of a slightly larger size thansolid rootis waitingAfter planting, the tree is watered and the crown is shaded withwhite agrotextileWatering should be continued throughout the season in the amount of about one bucket of water per tree. The shademust remain on the crown of the tree for several months. Also in the period of heavyfrostsandcold windsit is good to cover such a tree. Transplanting large trees always carries the risk of disease or even loss.

P:Every year in October, my thujas partially turn brown and fall off. For this reason, the hedge is thinning badly. How can I avoid it this year?

O:Thuja are very sensitive to the lack of water in the ground, especially when planted in ahedge , wherethe density of shrubsis very high, resulting in enormous competition not only in terms of water consumption, but also of nutrients. Not watered during summer droughts turn brown and shed their scales, which causes thinning of the hedge. You should also remember aboutfertilizing hedges.

Before winter, especially when autumn is dry, thujas must be watered abundantly so that they have a supply of water duringfrostyandsunny days, when high temperatures and frequent winds intensify evaporation from evergreen twigs. During this time, the plants cannotreplenish the water shortage, because the ground isfrozen.Besides, the plants can be sprayed againstfungal diseases as a preventive measurecausingbrowning of scales. This treatment can be performed in the spring.
