Fragrant garden

When planning a garden, the ornamental value of planted trees and shrubs is usually taken into account. It is also worth remembering about their beautiful smell, which can become an additional attraction, appreciated not only by us, but also by insects.

It's hard to imagine a colorful garden without butterflies. They are most often attracted by yellow, white, pink and purple flowers. The nectar they contain is an excellent food for these colorful insects. So if we want butterflies to appear in our garden, let's try to find a sunny, secluded spot for them - preferably sheltered by a hedge from the side from which the wind blows most often.

Aromatic garden planning

When creating an aromatic garden, remember that plants with fragrant flowers are best planted in secluded places, so that the fragrance does not spread too much and "escapes" from the garden during stronger gusts of wind. This can be prevented by various covers, e.g. building walls or hedges. The intensity of the smell is also influenced by moist soil, so it is good to water the bushes with the appropriate frequency.

When planning plantings, however, do not overdo it with the quantitative selection of shrubs and flowers, so that the smells do not displace each other and do not mix. It should also be remembered that the perception of the smell is an individual matter. What one person finds pleasant smells may be irritating or suffocating to another.

It is often the case that plants with showy flowers do not have an intense smell (e.g. rhododendrons) and vice versa. The plant smells good, but its flowers are inconspicuous. There are, however, a few exceptions, including lilacs, jasmine, honeysuckles
and some magnolias.

Irresistibly fragrant shrubs

Of the shrubs that can be recommended for a fragrant garden, lilacs must be replaced. They delight with both their unique scent and beautiful flowers. The Meyer Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' lilac with purple, paniculate inflorescences that develop in mid-June is especially worth recommending. This smallLilac(1.5 meters) is resistant to urban conditions, it can be planted singly and in groups. The Syringa microphylla variety is equally useful 'Superba' with lilac-pink flowers that reappear on the plant throughout the summer.

Philadelphus jasmine plants are also shrubs with beautiful and fragrant flowers. Among the numerous varieties, 'Virginal' deserves attention with very numerous, white and full flowers. Blooms profusely in June, but repeats flowering in July. The second, very valuable jasmine bird is 'Albatre'.The flowers are white, full, 4-5 centimeters in diameter, delicately fragrant, gathered in clusters of 5-7 pcs.Blooms in June and again in July.

Can be planted singly and in groups, and in low, shaped hedges. The 'Snowbelle' variety is equally attractive. It grows up to 2 meters, its flowers are white, full, slightly fragrant, gathered in clusters. Blooms profusely in late June and early July.A variety worth using in gardens, not only for its intensely fragrant flowers, but also for its attractive leaves, is 'Innocence'.Its leaves are dark green with yellowish and cream spots and streaks along the gills.

This plant reaches 1.5 meters in height. The flowers are white, single or semi-double, pleasantly fragrant (June and July). The fragrant jasmine tree 'Aureus' also has decorative leaves. Its bright yellow foliage slightly turns green in summer. Blooms at the end of May, very profusely and for a long time. The flowers are creamy white, pleasantly fragrant, 2.5-3 centimeters in diameter.

A valuable species due to its long and late flowering is David's budleja, commonly known as the butterfly bush.It can be planted in home gardens, both individually and in groups. It delights throughout the summer with its beautiful, large (30-40 centimeters) and fragrant inflorescences, in colors depending on the variety:

- 'Black Knight' - purple-violet,

- 'Ile de France' - purple,

- 'Pink Delight' - pink with a yellow center,

- 'White Profusion' - white,

- 'Lochinch' - purple with an orange center.

From climbers to aroma gardens, the Lonicera honeysuckles are a must.Their flowers give off quite a strong and pleasant fragrance. It is especially intense in the evening, with increased air humidity.
