Winter garden in three ways

If we are serious about growing exotic plants under glass, garden winterwe have to design and manufacture according to specific standards. First of all, it must meet the necessary lighting and temperature standards.

Simply put: thethe brighter room , the better the conditions for plant development. It turns out, however, that what is clear to us does not have to be clear to plants at all. Used inmodern constructions glass heat-insulatingfilter out 30 to 40% of the light needed by plants. The light that penetrates inside the garden is not strong, but it nevertheless provides the plantswith enoughamount energyStandard solar control glasses are much worse in this respect, because they block up to 70% of the sun's rays. The light that goes inside the garden allows onlyplants shade-lovingto survive, e.g. bananas.

While a person feels good inconditions greenhouseall year round, plants need a winter dormancy period with a phase of lower temperatures. Otherwise, they lose their growth force, weaker bloom , they lose their leaves and fall more oftenvictim pestsTaking into account the average winter temperatures inside the winter garden, the following are distinguished:

- warm winter gardens(with temperatures above 15 ° C),

- utempering warm winter gardens(temperature in the range from 5 to 10 ° C),

- cool conservatories(temperature below 5 ° C).

Therefore, different plants should be selected for each type of garden.

Summer all year round

Warm conservatories are rarely separated from the living area ( living room ), and if such a division exists, doors ( multi-leaf ) and so they remain open most of the time. Therefore, even in winter, the temperature in this type of garden does not fall below 15 ° C. In such conditions, species originating from tropical regions, e.g.hibiskus ,helikoniaand oleander Thevetia thevetioides. With good lighting, these plants bloom all year round. In order to prevent browning of the edges and tips of the leaves, e.g. ubanana , the room with the plants should be kept very humid;humidity above 60-70%Additionally, the radiators should be equipped with humidifiers.

In winter you cannot overdo irrigation, because although the plants are still active, their water demand is much lower than in summer. If the soil holds moisture for a long time, the roots may rot. Moderate should also be observed withfeedingRemember: plants are fed no more thanonce a monthwith half the standard dose, and some species are not fed at all.

Apart from plantstypically tropical , in warm winter gardens you can also grow plants that adapt to the temperature conditions. These include, among others Metrosideros robustus, many palms like the date and Washington, and desert plants like agave, yuccaanddracaena The latter tolerate dry, warm air very well, but they need good sunlight. In warm conservatories, check plants regularly forpresence pestsWhere there is constantheat , they can mealybugs and aphids appear. As a preventive measure, we can place yellow insecticidal tablets between plants. As a preventive measure, it is worth spraying water on the bottom of the leaves, and also rinse the topwet clothorsponge

In temperate climates

Moderate warm gardenswinter gardens combine elements of a gardenwarmandcoolOn the one hand, there is never frost here, and on the other hand, there are noconditions greenhouseThanks to this, the plants go through a period of winter dormancy. These are ideal conditions for South American,South AfricanandAustralianplants that are used to seasonal changes in temperature, but cannot stand the biting cold.Bougainvillea, plantscitrus ,passion flowersandstrelitziasbloom at 5 to 15 ° C until arrival winters. They do not bloom only during the fruiting period.

In a moderately warm garden you can also grow plants that are kept in cool gardens on a daily basis, such asagapanthus ,kuflikorjasmineThus, the number of available species increases significantly, and this in turn gives much greater possibilitiesarrangementCompanion plants are suitable, among others, lantana, cestrum and iochroma. They lose more leaves as the temperature drops, but they breakout again in spring.

For the winter, we advise you to wrap the pots with species sensitive to coldbubble with foil(or other available insulation material, e.g.jute or straw mat). Whyincrease heating , since the living conditions of plants can be improved in such a waysimpleandinexpensive way.

For plants during the dormant period, it does not matter that we raise the temperature a bit during the weekend or during the holidays. The soil in the pots warms up much slower thanair , eventuallyrootsmaintain a constant temperature and are still inactive. It does not matter whether the winter garden is insulated with traditional radiators or underfloor heating. In both cases, heatingaccelerates the drying of the soil , therefore the plants must be watered more often

It is a good habit toto place flowerpots on stands so that they are not in contact with the floor. For this purpose, you can use, among others, supports on wheels or stools. This small space between the floor and the container acts as anatural bufferwhich equalizes temperatures, both whenis increased anddecrease heating

In moderately warm gardens, pests are rather rare, as they too have a dormant period. We wait with feeding the plants until March. Likewise with the annual grooming cut; reach for the secateurs shortly before the plants start to shoot.
