Briggs equipment maintenance & Stratton out of season

Before the last days of tending work in home gardens come, it is worth thinking about preparing a petrol lawn mower for the winter break. A well-treated mower engine will certainly repay failure-free operation and long service life, not to mention the previously mentioned benefits.

For your own safety, ALWAYS make sure the spark plug wire is disconnected before starting any maintenance!

Remember that petrol lawn mowers should be maintained in accordance with the instruction manual for a given mower, as the manner in which this is done may be different for different types of devices.

Equipment maintenance after the season

1.

Remove / burn fueland possibly add fresh fuel with stabilizer for storage. After the fuel has burned out completely, you can also leave the fuel system empty. If it is already cold, leave the mower in a dry room after the engine has stalled before it cools down, which will prevent condensation on the metal parts of the whole device, including the inside of the carburetor.

2.

Clean or replaceair filterwith a new one. Do not clean the filter with compressed air, it may damage it permanently and let dirt into the engine interior!

3.

Replace the oil with a new oneWhile the engine is running, the oil loses its properties and collects deposits and dirt at the same time - this is a normal process. Leaving such oil in the engine may result in the deposition of impurities on the walls and internal parts of the engine - therefore it is worth changing the oil with a new one right after the season.

InBriggs & Strattonengines, it is possible and permitted to remove / pour out the used oil through the oil filler or suction pump, not just the drain plug in the sump. NOTE: the latest engine models can be produced without an oil drain plug. In such a case, the used oil is poured out through the filler or by suction with a special pump.

4.

It is also worthpreserving the inside of the engine : remove the spark plug (by the way replace it with a new one), inject 5-10 cm into the cylinder3clean and fresh engine oil, reinstall the spark plug and slowly rotate the engine shaft several times without starting the engine. The oil will coat the cylinder and piston walls, preventing corrosion and blockage of the piston rings. At the first start in spring, the oil will burn out after several seconds (smoke may appear from the muffler, disappearing quickly), and the engine will continue to work normally.

5.

Clean the fan and fan housing/ motor from grass clippings that have accumulated there during the season. This activity is often neglected, and leaving the place dirty causes clogging of the cooling fins and engine vents (in some models it is so-calledspinning mesh with small holes). As a consequence, the engine will overheat, power will drop, or even seize up.

Because for this operation you need to disassemble the top cover, the proper metal cover with a pull-cord starter - we recommend that you do it at an Authorized Service CenterBriggs & StrattonNote - if you want to do it on your own, they can be needed keys in sizes according to SAE, i.e. inch. Using metric wrenches will damage the bolts and nuts!

6.

Thoroughly clean the bottom of the mower , clean the grass cutter inlet channel, clean the basket and have the knife sharpened and balanced. During cleaning, the mower can only be tilted backwards, they light up - e.g. blocking the so-called handles at floor level with something heavier than a lawn mower.

7.

If the mower has a drive, check the condition of the drive belt . If it is frayed or rotated - replace it with a new one.

8.

The mower should bestored in a dry and ventilated roomIt should always be in the working position, i.e. horizontally, otherwise the air filter may become flooded or oil may leak into the muffler. After the engine has cooled down, you can cover the mower with a cover - dust will have limited access to the engine.

9.

If you have done all of the above - just add fresh fuel in the spring andthe mower will be immediately ready for operation.

Maintenance of mowers with INSTART technology

Users of mowers with an engineBriggs & StrattonwithINSTARTtechnology do not have to worry about additional recommendations. The battery is weatherproof, it can even stand in rain or snow without any damage - however, we suggest storing it in a dry place. It may also remain in the engine. The only thing that can happen to him is discharge. In spring, it is enough to charge it for 60 minutes, which gives us a minimum of 75 actuations or for 10 minutes and we have a minimum of 20 actuations. Nothing simpler!

Effects of correct handling

  • extended engine life
  • reduction of fuel consumption by up to 30%
  • reduction of harmful exhaust emissions by up to 50%
