Diseases of herbs - should you fight them chemically?

Table of contents

In winter, many of us grow herbs in pots, which provide us with vitamins that are so valuable at this time of the year.Unfortunately, mushrooms are not idle and we can see symptoms of infection on the leaves and shoots of basil, lemon balm or mint. Most often we deal with spots of both leaves and shoots.

The spots are oval or oblong in shape and are gray, brown, or dark brown in color. Sometimes you can see tiny black points inside the stain - these are places of fungus sporulation. Spots can be caused by several species of fungi. The most effective way to combat it is to immediately remove infected leaves or cut out infected shoots when the first symptoms are noticed.

Sometimes, however, the first symptoms go unnoticed, and then there is no way to remove individual leaves or shoots. In such a situation, many people turn to fungicides.According to the latest plant protection recommendations, only two preparations are registered for the protection of basil (as well as other herb species). They are used to combat gray mold and seedling gangrene.

The grace period for these remedies for basil is 30 days.As a rule, chemicals are used only in field cultivation, while in hobby farming, the use of chemical fungicides is not recommended.

Protection of herbs in apartments should focus primarily on protection against pests. For this purpose, we can use yellow sticky boards (or blue for thrips), and if necessary, a self-made preparation based on gray soap.
