Trees and shrubs in February

Planting hedges

If the weather is good, we can use this time to plant a new hedge. We need to know whether the bushes are to be led to low margins or to serve as a tall green screen. This is important because the height of a hedge is greatly influenced by the developmental characteristics of plants, especially growth force, which means that not every species can be given the desired height.

Sanitary cutting

An important cut in all shrubs will be to remove the shoots of sick, withered, frozen, crossing and faded flowers. This cut is called a corrective or sanitary cut.

Important shaping cuts

The forming cut is very important and it should be started in young plants, because later it may affect their growth and even be impossible to perform. It consists in leaving strong shoots in young plants, which will form the plant's skeleton.

Protection of cut wounds

Cutting should be done with sharp secateurs and saws, and cutting wounds, especially those with a diameter greater than 1 cm, should be covered with emulsion paint with the addition of a fungicide, e.g. 1-2% Topsin or Miedzian 50, or ready-made Santar preparations SM or Funaben 3, commercially available as a paste.

Prune shrubs blooming on annuals

These are shrubs that bloom on annuals, this year's, that is, those that arose in a given year, and the flowers will develop in late spring, summer and autumn of the same year.Prune all their shoots over the 3rd or 4th bud (eye) or on the so-called language. This group includes: Japanese and willowleaf tavern, David's budley, bouquet and shrub hydrangea.

Physiological drought

Particular attention should be paid to evergreen shrubs, which under the influence of increasingly warmer sun rays can stimulate the transpiration process, which leads to physiological drought.
