Conifers have many advantages. They look beautiful in the sun and rain, and when they are covered with snow, frost or rime. They are valued for the smell of essential oils, especially well felt on hot days.
However, in order for us to take advantage of all the advantages of conifers, we must first select the plants appropriate for the place. For growing in containers, we will choose dwarf varieties that are characterized by very slow growth and tolerate temporary drying or overflow of the substrate.
Conifers bought in containers can be planted in larger vessels (bowls and pots) from spring to autumn, but it is best to do this in spring or early autumn so that new plant roots have time to outgrow the lump of earth before winter.
When transplanting, try not to damage the roots. If, however, after breaking out of the pot, we see that the roots are very tangled and twisted, we can trim them slightly and loosen the lump a bit.The substrate for conifers should be slightly acidic or neutral. An important care treatment is watering - not very often, but abundantly.
Water is supplied to plants not only after planting and not only in summer, but also in winter, when there is no frost (though a little less then).Dwarf and super-dwarf varieties can be found among coniferous trees and shrubs of various species. These are, for example, common yew 'Białogard', vulture cypress' Nana Gracilis' and 'Baby Blue', common juniper 'Gold Cone', Korean fir 'Yew', Norway spruce 'Little Gem', white spruce ' Alberta Globe ', Serbian Spruce' Nana ', Mountain Pine' Mops' and 'Pumilo', Western Thuja 'Hoseri', 'Little Champion' and 'Teddy'.
How to choose plants when buying
We plant conifers singly or with other plants. These can be, for example, autumn-blooming perennials: bushy aster, sedum, or perennials with decorative leaves, for example, bugleberry, lungwort, tiarella, cranberry. You can also place next to the shrub: heather or scattered gaultery.
