Native to Brazil, shiny sage belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is a perennial in its natural state. In Polandit is best to grow shiny sageas an annual plant.
Shiny sage has a compact habitand reaches up to 50 cm in height. Dark green leaves with serrated edges are overgrown with branched, upright stems.
The ornament of sage are bell-shaped flowersgathered in lush spikes. The most popular are varieties with red flowers, but plants with unusual flower colors are more and more often grown: salmon, purple or multi-colored.

Another benefit of shiny sageis the timing and length of flowering. Flowers appear in June and last until the first frost, i.e. for 5 months!
Due to its compact habit and intensive flowering, shiny sage is a great plant for fringes. It can also be used as a supplement to a discount, filling the places of previously faded species.Therefore, sage should be planted next to the flowering bulbs in spring. When the onion species have faded, the sage will fill empty spaces until autumn.
Thanks to its intense colors, shiny sage wonderfully enlivens long-lasting compositions composed of green coniferous or deciduous shrubs.Dwarf varieties of shiny sagelook beautiful in pots and containers. Glossy sage Reddy series- these are dwarf plants with a compact habit and short stature. They are perfect for container cultivation and create fantastic flower carpets.
Shiny sage Firecracke series- is another dwarf variety with a compact habit and varieties with a wide range of colors. Flower colors can be blue, orange, white, pink and bicolor.
Shiny sage Salsa series- these are plants that keep their compact habit throughout the summer. Flowers in shades of red, purple, pink and white. There are also two-color varieties with red, pink or salmon flowers with white tips.
Glossy sage Amore series- is a classic garden sage with very good durability and abundant flowering in white, orange, red, purple, pink colors.
Glossy sage series Sizzler- is characterized by a large variety of flowering varieties in light and pastel shades of pink, red, purple and white. There is also a two-color variety - salmon-white.

Growing shiny sageworks best in full sun in fertile, fairly moist and slightly acidic soils. Sage also tolerates light shade and weaker soils, but then its flowering is slightly weaker. Therefore, it is worth meeting therequirements for shiny sageas to the cultivation position so that the plants delight with their appearance.
Sage planted in the groundwill withstand a temporary shortage of water well, but those grown in containers not necessarily. The situation is similar with fertilization. Every 2-3 weeks, sage should receive a dose of fertilizer for flowering plants, which will strengthen their growth and extend flowering. Especially potted plants are sensitive to nutrient deficiencies. Equally largeinfluence on the flowering of sage is the regular removal of faded inflorescences
The deadline for planting shiny sagefor garden beds is the second half of May, after already the risk of frost. The recommended planting spacing for sage is 25 to 40 cm between plants and 40 cm between rows.

If you want toprepare a seedling of shiny sage , seeds must be sown in February or March in boxes in a heated room.
Shiny sage seedsgerminate best at a temperature of around 18 ° C.Usually seedlings appear 1-2 weeks after sowing the seeds. When the seedlings have 1-2 true leaves, they are picked up into larger boxes or pots. In order for the plants to spread better, their tops are pinched when at least two pairs of leaves are formed.
Outsidesage obtained from sowing seedscan be planted after May 15, when the risk is over frosts. Remember to harden the seedlings first, i.e. gradually get the plants used to the conditions outside.
