Aspidistra wasis an extremely resistant to neglect houseplant decorated with oval, dark green leaves. It perfectly tolerates the deficiencies of light and irregular watering, thanks to which it has also gained the term iron leaf. We explain if there are any interestingvarieties of aspidistryfor growing at home, what are therequirements of aspidistryand whether this plant can be attacked by any diseases or pests despite its high resistance. Aspidistra amounted to(Aspidistra elatior) is a species of ornamental perennial native to the shady forests of China and Japan. In the Polish climate, it can only be grown as a pot plant that spends the winter indoors.
The main decoration isdark green aspidistry leavesThey are oval, slightly bend and can reach a length of 30 to 45 cm. They grow on long petioles directly from the creeping, underground rhizome. This plant does not produce an aboveground stem. The total height of the plant can be up to about 70 - 80 cm.
Although the plant can bloom, the flowers of the lofty aspidistryare not particularly decorative, as they grow just above the ground (they are pollinated by snakes in nature) and often go unnoticed. The plant may bloom in late winter or early spring, but this is rare in pot cultivation. If this happens, we will see tiny single star-shaped flowers that are matte purple.
Aspidistra tallest looksas a single specimen, while when fully developed, with already large leaves, it looks particularly dignified in the hallway. It is also an excellent potted plant for the office and living room.
Aspidistra amounted to the onlyspecies of the Aspidistra genus that is grown in our homes. Despite the fact that this genus includes over 170 species of plants.
Aspidistra equaled 'Variegata'has green leaves with longitudinal yellow stripes. It requires slightly better lighting and less fertilization, otherwise its attractive leaf color will fade.
Aspidistra high requires little lightModerate, diffused sunlight is best for her, but can tolerate quite a lot of shade. This is by far one of the easiest potted flowers to grow that like shade. The more that the aspidistra is also resistant to temperature fluctuations and dry air, so the conditions in our apartments, especially in winter, during the heating season.
In summer, during the growing season, aspidistra requires a temperature of around 21 ° Cand therefore an average room temperature. Let us not only place it in places that are excessively insolated and heated. However, it can be put outside, e.g. in a shady place in the garden. In winter, the temperature of growing aspidistry should be much lower, but let it not be lower than 10 ° C.

The Aspidistra is watered moderately , allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once every 2 weeks, aspidistryfertilization is done, but only half the recommended dose of fertilizer for green-leafed plants is given.
Every once in a whilethe dusty leaves of the aspidistry should be wiped with a soft, slightly damp clothThis will bring out their shine and the plant will better tolerate the shading.
Planting the aspidistry of the loftyis done every few years, when the pot is clearly too small. To fill a new pot, we use universal soil for potted plants, remembering to create a layer of expanded clay at the bottom of the pot. When the diameter of the pot is 30 cm, do not replant the aspidistry to larger pots. You can only trim the excess roots growing outside the pot and replace the top layer of soil with a fresh one.
Propagation of haughty aspidistry is done in springWhen transplanting an overly compacted plant, the clump can be divided (e.g. cut with a knife) in such a way that each of the new rhizome fragments obtained has 3 4 leaves. The new plants obtained are planted in pots with a diameter of about 12 cm.
Problems in growing aspidistryoccur extremely rarely, and most of them can be remedied by improving the conditions in which the plant is grown.
Brown stains on the leaves of aspidistrymay mean that the plant is in too much sun or too close to a hot radiator. Leafspotness can also be the result of too much or insufficient watering.
Split leaf tips in aspidistryis usually caused by too much fertilization. In such a situation, we reduce the doses of fertilizers by half.
Warm and dry air, which the aspidistra tolerates quite well, unfortunately favors thedevelopment of pests from the group of June , such as mealybugs and scales. The presence of mealybugs is evidenced by the appearance of fine, whitish wool-like flocs on the leaves and petioles. The scales appear in the form of slightly convex, red, oval disks that cover the bodies of these insects.
After noticingthe presence of pests on the aspidist , wipe the infected areas with a cotton pad soaked in a mixture of denatured alcohol or spirit with water (mixed in a ratio of 1:10) to wipe the insects off the plant. Then spray the entire plant with preparations against pests available in gardening stores, Emulpar Spray 750 ml or Substral Multi-Insekt. Both of these preparations are based on natural ingredients and are safe to use at home. Ifaspidistra pests attack in large numbers , you can use the stronger insecticide Polysect Hobby 750 ml.
