" When harvesting fruits such as apples, pears or plums, depending on the abundance of the crop, we may need more containers and boxes for fruit. It is best if they are comfortable, light and easy to carry. You can, of course, buy ready-made containers, but firstly, the traditional box is a bit too big to deserve the name of a handy, and secondly, we would miss a great opportunity to construct something ourselves. "

A self-made fruit cratewill certainly be cheaper than the one we buy, its size can be adjusted to our individual needs, and if we are terrified by the breaking of a large number of strips, we can make a simpler construction using 15 mm MFP board. It is a wood-based board that has a wide range of applications in finishing and decorative works, it is easy to install, and you do not need professional tools to process it. It is therefore not surprising that it has been widely used in the construction of furniture and interior design. Asmaterial for our fruit crate , it guarantees easy and low-cost execution, as well as lightness and handiness of the crates constructed in this way.
The listof materials needed to make a fruit crateis shown in the figure below. Of course, a hammer and nails can be replaced with a screwdriver and screws, and a hand saw with its mechanical equivalent, depending on our preferences and what equipment we have at home.

Wooden box for fruit - list of necessary materials:

1. Apples - delicious and juicy, from our garden2. 15 mm MFP board (a fragment of about 85 x 50 cm is enough)
3. Wooden strips 4x4 and 4x2 cm (a trim with a triangular cross-section will also be useful)
4. Tools, i.e. a hammer, nails, a saw, a carpenter's pencil and a ruler

Commonly used fruit crates are approximately 40x60 cm in size and 20 cm in height. Our self-madewooden fruit cratecould be a bit smaller to be more convenient and handy. For home use, we offer dimensions of 35x50x15 cm.See how to measure out the individual elements of the box.

Wooden box for fruit - box elements:
1. Cut the bottom of the box with dimensions of 35x50 cm from the MFP board with a thickness of 15 mm
2. We also cut the sides with dimensions of 12x35 cm and 12x47 cm
3. Cut three 15 cm high corners from the triangular section.
4. Make four sections of 35cm long from the 4x4 cm strip (legs and handles)
5. From the 4x2 cm strip, cut four posts, 29 cm high

After cutting these elements, we can connect them with nails or wood screws. Please note that there should be a gap between the bottom of the box and the side walls. This will facilitate the drainage of wet fruit and the cleaning of the crate. Such a gap at the bottom will also provide air circulation needed to keep apples or other fruits from rotting. In order to increase durability and aesthetics, the whole thing should be covered with a clear varnish or painted at your own discretion.Personally, however, I prefer to leave the boxes unpainted, as natural wood is best for storing fruit. This is what the finished fruit box looks likefruit boxof our own design.

Assembled wooden box:
1. Bottom of the box, 2. Gap between the side wall and the bottom
3. The frame is both the legs and the handle
4. Corners for mounting walls

Thanks to the frame, which is both a handle and legs, the box is easy to grab and carry. You can also stack the crates on top of each other without worrying about crushing the fruit. I hope that thewooden fruit boxwill be perfect for your farms, and that you will get a lot of satisfaction from making the boxes yourself.
