Trunk roses , also referred to as standard roses, are grafted forms taking the shape of characteristic rose trees. Unfortunately, although very pretty, such plants are usually sensitive to frost. Therefore, it is very important toprotect the roses on the trunk against winterThe cover requires both the rootstock, i.e. the stem of such a rose, and the decorative variety grafted on it, forming the crown of the rose tree. Trunk rosescan be planted in the garden, but also very well as plants grown in pots on balconies or terraces. Depending on whether they are grown in the ground or in pots, the way of securing the stem roses for the winterwill be slightly different.
Let's start withplanted stem roses in the gardenIn their case, we start withsecuring the base of the trunk against freezingby making a mound at its base. The mounds are piled up when the temperature regularly drops to zero degrees, but even before severe frosts arrive. Usually at the turn of October and November. The mounds are made of compost or garden soil to a height of about 20 cm.

The stump itself, which is the washer, is usually highly durable and frost-resistant, it does not need to be wrapped with any material above the mound. Accordingly, must be secured against the winter by the crown of a rose tree , i.e. a decorative variety grafted onto a rootstock. For this purpose, the tree crown is wrapped with air-permeable insulating material. Non-woven agrotextile or jute bags, which are tied with string, are ideal. The agrotextile or jute bag must be tied from the bottom of the rose tree crown in such a way that the grafting site is well protected.
However, it often happens that despite being wrapped in agrotextile or jute, the plant freezes or under a too warm and not airy cover fungal diseases. That is why many experienced gardeners recommend a completely differentway to protect roses on the trunk against winterAfter the base of a rose tree trunk has been rooted, untie the trunk of the rose from the stake holding it, and then bend the crown of the tree to the ground and sprinkle it as well a mound of earth. You can additionally cover it with leaves or coniferous branches. It may look strange, but it is the most reliable way toprotect the roses on the trunk from winter

As I have already mentioned, we deal withstem roses in pots a bit differentlyIn their case, before winter, the pots should be pitted in the ground, which will protect the roots from freezing. Then, just like in the case of roses growing in the garden, make a mound around the stump, and wrap the crown of the tree with agrotextile or bend it to the ground and sprinkle it with a mound.
If we cannot plant the pots in the garden, roses on a trunk before wintershould be moved to a cool, unheated room, protected against frost (e.g. garage). If we only have a balcony or terrace, the pot with a rose on the trunk is best placed in a large cardboard box, and the spaces between the pot and the edges of the cardboard should be filled with insulating material, e.g. sawdust or broken pieces of polystyrene. The crown of the tree is wrapped in agrotextile or jute sack, as in the case of roses on the trunk growing in the garden.
