How to extend the life of roses in a vase?

1. Trim the tips of the rose shoots
In order for the roses to remain in the vase longer, before putting them in the water, trim the lower ends of the shoots with a sharp knife at a large angle This will increase the water uptake area. We make the cut with one decisive move. Trimming with scissors is less appropriate as scissors can crush and damage the vascular tissues. In this case, the flowers will not be able to take up water. Likewise, do not smash the ends with a hammer. Cut the ends of the shoots daily. In this way, we will avoid the formation of a plug caused by putrefactive bacteria. We also remove all lower leaves, because when immersed in water, they will rot very quickly and lead to its contamination.

2. Avoid sudden changes in temperature
If we buy roses in winter, then after bringing them to a warm room, they should remain in the packaging for about 2 hours.
3. Always put the roses in cold water
The water that we pour into the vase intended for roses must be cold. Dishes, on the other hand, are thoroughly washed, free of any limescale. Bacteria accumulate on the stone sediment, which promotes plant rot.Place the vessel with the roses in a cool room. At night, we can take the roses out of the vessel and immerse them in a bathtub with cold water.

4. Place the vase with roses in the right place
We place the cut roses in a place that is not sunny and cool. They should also not be placed near ripening fruit and aging flowers. Fruits and flowers emit gas with a sweetish smell as they mature? ethylene, which accelerates the aging of roses.
5. Change the water in the vase daily
Water purity is essential when it comes to the durability of cut roses.Change the water in the vase with roses every day , and wash the vessel thoroughly with each water change. If we do not have such a possibility, then we can add a little sodium hypochlorite (bleach, e.g.Ace) - an incomplete cap is enough for 1 liter of water. This remedy will prevent the growth of bacteria, and its low concentration will not harm roses. Another solution is to acidify the water with a pinch of citric acid. Putrefying bacteria will not thrive in an acidic environment. We can also add a drop of washing-up liquid to the water.

6. Add sugar to the water in the vase
Sugar plays a very important role in extending the life of cut roses. Sugar, next to bactericides and fungicides, is the basic component of some nutrients that extend the life of cut roses. Roses take up sugar dissolved in water and incorporate it into the metabolism of flowers, leaves and stems. Thanks to this, they retain their natural color, because the petals do not bluish. An increase in the sugar concentration in the flakes also increases the cells' ability to absorb water, thus maintaining a turgor. One teaspoon of sugar per liter of water in a vase with roses

Note!Change the water with sugar every day, because sugar is also an excellent breeding ground for bacteria.

7. Choose the right flower conditioner
At a florist, we can ask for a special agent to extend the life of roses (eg Chrysal). It is important to use only preparations intended for roses, because other mixtures may be toxic to roses.
