The firstsymptoms of pear rustappear on young pear leaves in spring. From May onwards, you can observe small orange-yellow spots on the top of the pear leaves. Over time, the surface of the spots increases in size and takes the form of bright orange growths. In these places the leaves thicken and stiffen. The growths are spongy inside. In summer, conical yellow spore clusters form on the lower part of the leaves. Infested leaves fall prematurely from trees.
Symptoms of pear rustoccur, although much less frequently, also on fruits, petioles and shoots. They appear as orange, raised and hard spots. Infected fruits most often fall to the ground, and those that remain on the tree are not fit for consumption.
Pear rust preventionis first of all to avoid planting Sabina juniper near pears, which is an intermediate host of the pathogen causing this disease.Unfortunately, in allotment gardens it is difficult to do, due to the growing popularity of ornamental plantings. The spores of the fungus, transferred from junipers due to gusts of wind, can travel several hundred meters or even several kilometers. It is practically impossible to eliminate junipers from such a large area of plots.
Thereforepear rust develops mainly in amateur cropsin allotment and home gardens. If we want to grow pear trees without any problems, it is worth removing junipers from our own garden or checking them for juniper rust.
On junipers, rust appears as lumps and orange spikes , jelly-like or tongue-like features sticking out of the shoot. Infected juniper shoots must be cut below the lesion, and the whole plants must be sprayed with fungicides to combat rust on conifers, such asSaprol Hobby long-acting or Scorpion 325 SC. It is also worth asking the neighbors to avoid growing junipers as well, or at least check them for rust. Fighting rust on junipers will certainlyreduce the risk of pear rust , although it will not completely eliminate the disease.
Good to knowFor planting in your garden, choose pear varieties resistant or not sensitive to pear rust. Pear trees rarely affected by rust include the following varieties: Parisian, Bera Hardy, Lukasówka. However, the cultivation of varieties most sensitive to this disease should be avoided. The much-liked and often planted varieties of pear trees prone to rust are: Williams Bonkret and, unfortunately, also Favorite (Klapsa).
Pear rust sprayingis carried out from the pink bud phase to the end of flowering (up to 30 days after the flower petals have fallen). They should be performed at intervals of 10-14 days.Score 250 EC was the most effective preparation against pear rust and was once recommended for amateur cultivation. However, it was necessary to remember that it is effective only at temperatures above 12 ° C and should not be used more than twice a season, due to the possibility of becoming resistant to this preparation of the fungus causing pear scab.

UnfortunatelyScore 250 SC has been discontinued from pear rust controland is now allowed to use Score 250 EC only for the control of apple and pear scab and black rot of stone trees on cherries.
The editors of our guide receive many e-mails in which gardeners and amateur gardeners complain that other available resources, such as Miedzian 50 WP or Topsin M 500 SC, are not effective enough. In response to your questions regarding the possibility of effective combating pear rust, in the current legal status , we especially recommend Magnicur Gold(it is used in the amount of 1.5 g dissolved in 5-7.5 liters of water, which is sufficient for spraying an area of 100m²).It is currentlythe only preparation for combating pear rust in amateur crops

However, we are left with the problem thatMagnicur Gold can be used no more than twice a seasonAnd this is often not enough to protect pear trees against rust. Searching for a solution to this problem, I asked my fellow growers how they were doing, because the problem of pear rust practically does not exist in commercial orchards.
The answer was quite unambiguous - in commercial orchards numerous pear sprayings are performed against scab and this also protects the plants against rust. Therefore, in home and allotment gardensI suggest to also spray scabFor this purpose, we can use prepratay allowed to control scab on pear, such as: Syllit 60 WP, Score 250 EC, Kaptan suspension 50 WP . Remember, however, that Score and Kaptan are intended only for professional users.
An alternative to the above-mentioned preparations can beecological spraying on pear rustperformed with natural preparations.
