Persimmon, or the apple of the Orient, is found in China, Japan and Korea on tall Eastern ebony trees. They produce orange-yellow fruits, called persimmons, Oriental apples or kaki, with a taste reminiscent of ripe apricots.Sometimes they can be easily confused with tomatoes because they are similar in shape and color. The edible part of a persimmon is both very sweet and soft flesh and skin. The fruit is eaten raw, it can also be added to fruit salads or jellies. Persimmon has a high nutritional value because it contains a lot of vitamin C and A as well as carotene.
Eastern Hurma is quite a demanding tree in terms of position. It is an exotic plant that can be grown in the warmest regions of Poland so that it can have the right conditions. It is not frost resistant, so it is important to prepare a protective litter and a cover. A better idea is to grow in large pots, which will guarantee quick and easy transfer to a bright room where it will overwinter in the coldest months.
The soil should be well-drained, fertile and humus-rich. Perfect for a sunny position with moderately moist soil.Hurma eastern is a demanding plant and the weather conditions we are in should be carefully considered. there is a chance that with a warm, long and exceptionally favorable autumn the plant will bear fleshy and plump fruit.
Both cultivation in the ground and in pot cultivation must have certain rules, but the latter is a bit easier, especially when we live in a slightly colder region of Poland. We can get the plant step by step from seeds, but remember that we will get the fruit only after about 8 years of growing this plant from seeds.
Seeds are widely available in good garden stores, or we can do this by sourcing them straight from the fruit. They must be ripe kaki fruit, preferably with a brownish-orange skin and delicate, soft flesh. We take out the seeds gently with a stick and place them on a paper towel until lightly dry. Are you wondering how to eat kakis? After removing the seeds, it will still taste great in salads and jams!
Then we wrap a paper or a paper towel and soak it with water. we try to keep it from leaking, just a bit damp. Put it into a jar and close it with a lid. Put it in the fridge for about 2 months, controlling the humidity of the paper towel.
After about 2-3 months, it is possible to sow a persimmon at home on a window sill in a pot. Before sowing, check that any seeds are not covered with mold. Remove the faulty ones, and sow the rest into fertile and well-drained soil in pots. keep the substrate moist and place the pot in the warmest place in the apartment. Thanks to this, we are sure that within 3 weeks they will start to germinate and develop properly.
