Regardless of whether we are talking about a freely growing or formal hedge, each variant of a green fence has excellent performance properties. The hedge absorbs dust and noise, reduces the wind rush, decorates and covers. The choice of the form, and thus the species of the plant, depends first of all on the area that can be used for plant cultivation. For hedges that grow freely, and therefore occupy the most space, we can recommend, for example, varicose veins, forsythia, collchvice or van Houtte's tavula. These shrubs have the additional advantage that they bloom profusely.
Shoots of coniferous hedges are carefully shortened, pruning the increments from the last year only. Older shoots better not to touch.
The hedge is cut in accordance with the natural rhythm of plant life. Therefore, some species need to be trimmed once a year, others need to be trimmed several times. Of course, formed hedges require the most effort. For home planting, will be suitable hornbeam and common beech. Among the coniferous trees and shrubs, the common yew, thuja and cypress are worth recommending. Deciduous trees and evergreen shrubs, incl. boxwood, firefly, bay laurel and holly. The privetcannot be overestimated as it has a reputation for being indestructible and very responsive to cutting. Hawthorn and field maple will be an unobvious choice.
Thuja is not particularly demanding to grow, but it likes to be handled gently when it comes to pruning. A hard cut is discouraged here. The photo shows the Fiskars PowerGear shears with a patented gear mechanism that allows easy cutting with less pressure.
Regular hedge shapes are obtained by a maintenance pruning. We cut deciduous hedges from the third year after planting. It is important to give them a trapezoidal cross-section, because thanks to this profile the sunlight will also reach the lower shoots. Strings, strip rules or cardboard templates will be helpful in keeping the cutting plane even.Leafy hedges can be pruned at the end of February (first cut). The next cut should be scheduled for June. The upper edge of the hedge should be rounded or even sloped to facilitate the sliding of the melting snow.If the shrubs are growing strongly, they can be trimmed a third time (in August or September).Conifers usually pruned in late spring, andsecond time in mid-summer , regrown shoots must lignified before winter.
The jasmine tree is suitable for a luxuriantly flowering hedge. The shrub likes any soil, it reaches 2-3 m in height. The photo shows the Fiskars hedge trimmer - ideal for shortening green, non-lignified shoots.
A hedge can have a different profile. Tall plantings (up to 2 meters) of trees and shrubs with large leaves, such as ligusters or laurels, can be easily shapedinto a semi-. Such a shape guarantees that the shoots are evenly exposed to sunlight on the entire surface of the hedge.
Conifer hedges (yew, thuja) should be shaped in such a way as to obtain atrapezoidal profile , it also provides good sunlight for the side walls. We make molding in the first years after planting.
Cubic forms are recommendedonly for shade tolerant species such as yew, hornbeam and common beech. They can also be used for low edged hedges. The poles and strings that are stretched along the walls of the hedge are helpful in keeping the plane straight. Cutting is best done on a cloudy day or in the evening.
Yews can be pruned harder as there are many sleeping buds on their stems and stems that will restore the crown. Shown here is Fiskars Quantum ™ shear with TruEdge technology blade for clean, precise cuts.
The type of tools has a great influence on the quality of the cut. Hand scissors cut differently than electric scissors. For example, it is recommended to cutlaurels with secateursor hand-held scissors, leaf by leaf or rush by shoot, because the large blades of electric scissors tear the leaf blades, causing them to turn brown. An anvil pruner with a flat bottom blade is best for removing individual dry twigs. A pruner with a scissor mechanism is suitable for cutting soft green shoots. The blades should always be smooth and sharp, otherwise a lacerated wound will form when cut. If the shoot is to be removed, cut it out at the root; if it is to be shortened, it must be trimmed above the eyelet facing the outside of the crown.
Thanks to tools such as the Fiskars giraffe shears, we can easily trim even hard-to-reach, high-lying shoots.
Lever shears are perfect for cutting hedges. Thanks to the unique system of gears they are equipped with, you can get up to three times the cutting force. In addition, there are such amenities as telescopic handles or rotating cutting heads for trimming higher parts of trees and shrubs.
Tools with telescopic handles allow for convenient trimming of shoots at different heights. This is Fiskars SmartFit.
