Daffodil - spring flower
Daffodil is a harbinger of spring. When it grows out from under the snow cover, you can realize that a warmer season is coming soon. Initially, green, oblong daffodil leaves break through the ground. Only later does a stem with a bud appear, from which a yellow flower develops. It is cultivated in Poland in gardens and flower beds, due to the relatively early flowering time and beautiful, bright flowers. It can also be used in floristry to create decorative compositions and bouquets. It is also grown indoors, due to its visual qualities and flowering, most often during Easter. It can be a decoration for a window, a Christmas table, as well as a basket with a Christmas candle. It is a plant from the amaryllis family. It occurs naturally in Portugal and Spain.Daffodil - a symbol of respect and memory of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which took place on April 19, 1943. The Yellow Daffodils campaign is organized throughout the country by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews together with volunteers. Its purpose is to commemorate and promote knowledge about the uprising and its participants. The flower became a symbol due to the figure of Marek Edelman, the hero and last leader of the Jewish Combat Organization. In order to commemorate the date of the outbreak of the uprising, each year he placed a bouquet of narcissus at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Muranów. Moreover, on the same day, each year he also received a bouquet of these flowers from an anonymous donor.Daffodils - cultivationDaffodils grown in gardens are hardy plants. They prefer solar or light shade exhibitions. They are frost resistant, they don't even need extra cover for the winter. They also do not require any special care treatments. They can be grown in garden soil, preferably humus, slightly acidic or neutral (pH 6-7), maintaining constant humidity. When the spring period begins and the narcissus flower reaches 5 cm in height, you can add nitrogen fertilizer to the soil. Urea, ammonium sulphate or ammonium nitrate are suitable for this purpose. If narcissi grows in the same place for several years, then a compound fertilizer is used for flowering or bulbous plants. When to plant daffodils? The daffodil flower produces adventitious bulbs that grow larger. Thanks to them, you can easily propagate the plant. When the dying off of the leaves and ground shoots are noticed, the bulbs are dug up. This can be done in June and July.Cleaned and prepared bulbs are put aside in an airy, cool and dark place. They can be seasoned with an antifungal agent. In September, they are planted in a previously prepared place, 3-4 onions per well. You wonder how deep you can plant daffodils so that they can develop a new flower in the next season? Well, the depth of planting bulbs in a hole is about 6 centimeters. It is also a good idea to keep a distance of 20 centimeters between the individual wells. You cannot plant daffodils later than in September, because the onions will not have time to develop a root and will not be frost resistant. After planting, the crop should be watered abundantly. If the clump of daffodils becomes thicker and the flowers are plentiful, thin it out. They can grow in one place for 5-8 years. So this is the answer to the question of whether the daffodil bulbs are perennial? Yes, they can stay in solid ground for several years, then it is best to dig up the bulbs, and after a few months - in September, plant them in a new place. When do daffodils bloom?Daffodils bloom from late March to May. They have the ability to grow even from under the snow. In the year with warmer spring temperatures, daffodils grow in the lower grasses and in the gardens. They grow out of bulbs. At first a clump of green oblong leaves appears. Only later does a flower stalk develop over the following days. One shoot can contain from 2 to even 8 flowers. The entire daffodil plant grows up to 40 centimeters. It has a long stem ending in a yellow flower.Daffodils in a pot - how often to water?Yellow spring bulbs grown in pots are daffodils. Flowers can also be cultivated at home outside the garden. They decorate tables, windows and balconies. For home breeding, bulbs are needed, after a minimum two-month rest period - aging in a cool place. After this time, they should develop leaves and shoots. The substrate in the pot is filled with permeable, fertile soil, into which the daffodil bulbs are planted. During the period of initial growth, the temperature should be around 10 degrees Celsius, and when developing buds are already visible, the temperature may be raised. However, the cooler it is in the room, the longer the flowers will be able to survive. Daffodils prefer a constantly moist substrate and a sunny place. So that the soil in the pot does not dry out, it is best to water it into the base less abundantly, but more often. This may be three times a week. Once every two weeks, the farms are fertilized with compost and a potassium-containing agent. After the flowers have faded, the bulbs and the dry stems are left to rest. If they are well stored, they can be planted again in the next spring season.Daffodil and narcissus - what are the differences? Most people don't know the difference between a daffodil and a narcissist. Yellow narcissus is a daffodil. These two parts of the name appear even in the systematics of the species Narcissus jonquilla or daffodil narcissus. This name is reserved only for this color of flowers. All other colors of these flowers are called narcissus: cream, white and yellow, orange, salmon, white with a red edge, and all white. Narcissi may also differ in height, shape of flowers and their edge finish. The daffodil petals are pointed, and the flower itself is about 3 centimeters in diameter. Many jonqilla hybrids are descended from this species.
