The turn of summer and fall is a good time to set up a lawn. The hot and warm summer months are not conducive to this treatment, because the turf must be watered frequently, and the high temperatures do not always allow the seeds to germinate.Let's not forget that a lawn set up in summer necessarily requires an irrigation system. Before we set up a lawn in September, we should properly prepare the soil. It is very important to get rid of all perennial weeds by thoroughly digging the soil and digging up any permanent organs such as weed roots and rhizomes.
The most troublesome weeds are couch grass, nettle, dandelion, ground elder and thistle. We must remove them so that they do not grow back, because then the turf will be very difficult to maintain and care for.We can also get rid of weeds chemically, using a total herbicide, i.e. one that works systematically, circulating in plants. We only use it on the green parts of plants. After 3-4 weeks, when the weeds are dry, we start digging the soil thoroughly to a depth of about 20 cm.
Very good results in the fight against weeds also give the use of dark agrotextile, which we spread in the place where we plan the lawn.Unfortunately, the soil surface should be covered for at least several months. The woven fabric does not let the light pass through, but the air and moisture do not let through. Lack of light causes the weeds to die and decompose underneath the material. After removing the agrotextile or applying a herbicide, we have clean soil that needs to be dug.
Before digging, it is good to apply compost in a dose of about 30 kg per 10 m2. If we do not have it, use a multi-component fertilizer, such as Azofoska, at a dose of approx. 2 kg per 100 m2. After digging, level the surface with a rake, then roll it so that it presses the soil. Then capillaries will form, through which water is transported to the top layers of the soil. After rolling, gently rake the soil to a depth of about 2-3 cm and finally we start sowing the lawn.
The soil under the turf is just as easy as under the lawn with the seed. The first strip of the gift can be arranged from the middle or on the edge of the planned lawn.
Per 100 m2, approximately 2-3 kg of seeds are sown. After sowing, the seeds should be ruffled or covered with a 2 cm thin layer of peat substrate. Then roll them, i.e. press them against the top layer of soil. After sowing, water the lawn with a small stream at a dose of about 10 l of water per 1 m2. When it is dry, we irrigate the turf once a week. Grass seeds emerge after about 3 weeks.
We start mowing the first time when the young grass is about 10 cm high (we mow it at the height of about 6 cm). We perform the next mowing every week until the end of November. In order for the grass to overwinter well, it is recommended to fertilize with potassium sulphate in October at a dose of 3 kg per 100 m2.
