Viticulture - we set up a vineyard

Table of contents

A few years ago I decided to start asmall vineyard . The first three years brought me the most problems. It was then that the bushes had to be selected, planted and shaped.

Preparation of soil for planting
The place wheregrapevineswill be planted in spring, should be prepared in summer, and also in autumn in the preceding year. The soil must be weeded, leveled and properly fertilized. I removed the weeds by digging deep into the soil and pulling them out by hand. Then I sprayed Roundup + Chwastox Extra with 10 ml of preparations per liter of water with the addition of ammonium sulphate (30 g / liter). My soil has a low pH, so I additionally applied liming (approx. 300-500 g per m²). I placed the lime deep (up to 30-40 cm) and mixed it with the soil. I spread out the manure in the fall, but you might as well apply compost. I believe that the best for grapes is fermented cow or sheep manure. If someone cannot use organic fertilizer, it is worth helping with multi-component mineral preparations (Azofoska, Hydrocomplex or CropCare). Remember that the better the soil is fertilized, the sooner the young bushes will take root and grow.

Planting grapevines

  • Seedlingscan come from field nurseries (choose long 3-4 buds) or from cultivation in containers.
  • Plants in pots can be planted at any time, even in summer. After planting, they are not subject to stress and take on well.
  • I chose untapped seedlings for my vineyard. Their method of planting is more complicated. Cut them into 2-3 buds and put them all into the ground.
  • At the bottom of the hole, form a small mound of better soil (e.g. peat substrate), on which we place the roots carefully. Cover such a seedling to half its length with soil, pour about 5 liters of water and sprinkle with soil. Only the head with buds should protrude above the ground, which we then mound. Together with the seedlings, bury sufficiently thick supports. I used hazel sticks in my cultivation. We will attach the growing vines to them for the first two years. We build the right scaffolding in the second year in the fall or in the third spring.

The bushes planted in this way are cleaned of randomly growing shoots and roots. Removing shallow roots forces the plant to take root deeply. Thanks to thismy vinesstarted the season a bit later and were less prone to frost.
