Its name is a combination of two Greek words: rhodon, meaning rose, and dendron, meaning tree. The flowering of rhododendrons takes 2 to 3 weeks.
Rhododendrons include both dwarf specimens and giants that reach the height of medium-sized trees. Most rhododendron leaves are evergreen.Large rhododendrons can withstand strong pruning, but may not bloom for some time afterwards.
The shrub has very specific expectations as to environmental conditions, especially the substrate.Rhododendron likes sheltered places in partial shade, where the soil is loose, humus, moist and acidic (with a pH of 4 / 5). It should be noted that the higher the pH, the weaker the flowering and growth rate will be. Rhododendrons can be planted all year round (we do not plant only in frosty weather).
Rhododendrons can be propagated by sowing, cutting and placing. The simplest method for an amateur is to reproduce by layering.
In principle, rhododendrons do not need pruning. It is good for them to regularly feed them with organic fertilizer, e.g. hornmeal, or complete mineral fertilizer (preferably with fertilizer for rhododendrons)After flowering, the faded flowers break off.If the shrub feels good in our garden, will stay there for many years.
What are the ecological remedies for rhododendron leaf disease?
The most common causes of rhododendron leaf diseases are fungal pathogens that cause diseases such as leaf spot, gray mold, anthracnose, powdery mildew. Then it is best to reach for proven plant protection products - fungicides, e.g. Topsin. However, if someone really cares about using only biopreparations, the Agricultural Advisory Center in Brwinów, in its publication "Preparation of composts and biopreparations. Natural methods of maintaining soil fertility and plant protection ”, points out that yarrow extract should be used as a preventive measure against fungal leaf blotch and powdery mildew, while in the control, tansy extract is recommended.
- says Dr. Eng. Tomasz Mróz
Rhododendron looks better in group plantings than in solitary plantings.Recommended for both small and large gardens.
The rich collections of rhododendrons can be seen, among others at the Kórnik Arboretum and the Wojsławice Arboretum.
