January in the garden

Decorative garden

We shake off the snow

Heavy snow exposes all conifers to breaking branches. This problem concerns both spherical, columnar and horizontal plants. However, the columnar and spherical forms should be carefully secured.By tying them with string, we will significantly reduce the surface on which snow can settle.

Horizontal shrubs will be protected against fractures by frequent shaking off the snow. This problem also affects deciduous trees and shrubs. In their case, the basic care is also the frequent release of the branches from the weight of the snow.

We cover shrubs and trees

Significant temperature drops happen even during seemingly mild winters. Unfortunately, temperature fluctuations can significantly impair the he alth of a plant that has been hardened by undemanding winter. It will not hurt to protect the plants from temperature fluctuations, at least partially, by covering them with non-woven fabric. This applies primarily to plants such as hydrangeas, rhododendrons, young bush peonies, heathers and heaths, lavender or santolina, roses grafted on a trunk and palm maples.

In turn, young trees with smooth and dark bark are exposed to cracks in the bark caused by severe frost. We recommend bleaching them.It is also worth covering the crowns of small trees or shrubs and trunks with corrugated cardboard or straw mat with the agrotextile.

Water the evergreen shrub

During the thaw, let's take care of watering evergreen shrubs - both coniferous and deciduous, whether planted in the ground or in containers. The state of dormancy does not mean that the plants have stopped all their vital functions. Thus, water losses caused by its natural evaporation from the soil during the thaw should be supplemented.

Trees and shrubs

We protect trunks

Whitening of tree trunks is the basic winter care treatment for young trees. They should be done on a sunny day, when the temperature has not yet dropped below zero.Let's bear in mind that the trees heat up the most to the south side, so we need to pay the most attention to it.

Bleaching prevents bark cracking and reduces the temperature difference between the times of the day. The treatment is performed using lime milk made of 2 kilograms of quicklime and 10 liters of water. If the treatment is to fulfill its purpose, it should be carried out by the end of January.Trunks painted in autumn should be checked if the lime has not been washed away by rains and repainted if the previously applied layer has disappeared.

We protect young trees

January frosts are very dangerous for newly planted young autumn trees. Let's protect them with straw mulch or winter fleece.

Vegetable

End of autumn-winter harvest

We close the autumn-winter season in the vegetable garden with the last harvest of Brussels sprouts, kale and leeks. Brussels sprouts and kale can be eaten on a regular basis or frozen. If the soil has not yet frozen, collect the leeks intended for consumption during the winter.Dig them up with the roots and lower them.

We prepare the frames

While preparing for the slowly approaching spring, it is worth preparing an inspection frame for growing early vegetables in January, such as lettuce or radishes. It can also be used as a seedling for early cruciferous vegetables, leeks for summer harvesting, and root celery and celery.
