Succulents - beautiful and easy to care for

This is an amazing group of plants indeed! It is composed of various, also unrelated, species of modest habit that can do well without our help and maintain an attractive appearance all year round. They have one common and easily noticeable feature: thick, fleshy leaves.During the warmest months of the growing season, leaf succulents withstand intense sunlight without much damage and are not afraid of even long periods of drought, because they can then use the water stored in the leaves.

Exotic, glamorous, hardy

Cold hardiness species, e.g. sedumorrojnika , they charm with their exotic beauty like plants from the south all year round. In the garden and on the terrace, they occupy small niches, but they are clearly visible thanks to their showy leaves, as well as original, delicate flowers in the summer.Despite their high resistance , they require a bit of care in winter. For protection against rain, snow and frost, the plants should be moved to an unheated room or covered with a cloth.

The thermophilicthick-leaved plantsVarious species of aloe, aeonium, grouse, colossus, écheveria and kalanchoe are just some of the most famous representatives of a large group of tropical succulents.Remember that exotic specimens should be at home before the first autumn frosts. Here, in a bright and cool room, they can safely wait out the coldest months of the year.

The most important thing is the right substrate

The roots of plants with thick, fleshy leaves do not tolerate the moisture that remains in the pot for a long time. Therefore, they thrive best in a permeable mixture of clay soil, garden soil and gravel. At the bottom of the container, first put a drainage layer made of expanded clay or gravel. Do not forget about the holes draining excess water from the vessel. We can plant undemanding plants in the gaps between the tiles, tin cans, plates, old pots, etc.

Succulents have extremely modest care requirements. We water them when the substrate is completely dry, but do not sprinkle the leaf rosettes. We carefully remove wilting or rotting leaves and rosettes. We can cut off the mother plants without fear and plant them separately. In spring, it is worth feeding them with special fertilizers for succulents and cacti.

Succulents and cacti - unconventional arrangements

  • Rosettes of waxed Echeveria leaves use the energy of the spring sun to adorn themselves with eye-catching orange-yellow inflorescences on long stems from April to June.
  • The green crassula crassula, the red-green eonium Aeonium 'Atropurpureum' and the spiked aloe Aloe have differently shaped leaves, but it is for this reason that they form a very effective group. The beauty of the plants is emphasized by modest, slender pots.
  • The sun's rays make a slight red bloom appear on the leaves of the Kalanchoe thyrsiflora. The plant is satisfied with extremely small doses of water, but requires a lot of light all year round.
