Table of contents

When describing the benefits of summer, we should not forget about the fragrances. Among them, the lemon aroma stands out, which is strongly associated with freshness and summer lightness.

The source of the characteristic smell of fruits and leaves of the lemon tree are essential oils. These volatile substances, not only with lemon aroma, are also produced by other plants in their tissues.Fragrant oils play an important role. They protect plants from pests that feed on leaves, shoots, and flowers, and they also attract flower-pollinating animals.

Fruity aromas are often found among herbs. The names, e.g. lemon thyme, lemongrass, lemon savory, tell us about the fragrances of their leaves and flowers.

The intensity of fragrances varies. Some plants smell light and delicate, others are distinguished by a strong lemon aroma. The scent of lemon verbena, or Aloysia citriodora, is the most similar to the original. The leaves of plants before flowering have the most complete fragrance. It is best to cut the shoots in the morning, as soon as the dew is dry.Herbs, apart from lemongrass, should be rather starved.
