Practical Gardener: rejuvenating strawberry plantations

Decorative garden: shared - perennials not only in late summer

The divided Heleniums occupy one of the leading places in perennial gardens. Mainly cultivated garden cultivars, Helenium hybridum. They differ in the height of the plants, the color of the baskets and the flowering date. For example, 'Moerheim Beauty' reaches a height of 80 cm, its baskets are fiery-red-brown and blooms in June-July; 'Butterpat' grows up to 150 cm, the baskets are red and yellow with a brown center and blooms from August to October.

The 'Havelsonne' with yellow flowers and a height of 120 cm, and 'Wonadonga', which also has yellow ligular flowers, but a bit darker in the center of the basket and higher (140 cm), also bloom at this date.Fast and lush plant growth, huge yellow, orange, brick-red, reddish-brown and brown umbels create great possibilities of combinations with other perennials blooming in the second half of the 19th century. summer and early autumn.

Pruning the plants in May allows you to delay flowering by 2-3 weeks and results in better branching of inflorescence shoots. Growing the bivalves is not difficult. They only need fertile soil, a sunny place and not too dry.

Balconies and terraces: we breed the prickly pear

Most cacti are stem succulents - they store water in thick, fleshy stems. In order to limit water transpiration, their leaves are strongly reduced - they have the form of thorns gathered in bunches, stuck in a pillow of tiny hairs called areola. They also protect plants against "intervention" by people and animals. Not only the long thorns are dangerous, but also the tiny ones hidden in the fluff of the areola. They are found, for example, in the prickly pear. They are brittle and equipped with various types of hooks - they easily stick into the skin, break them and are difficult to get out.

In warmer regions of Poland, some prickly pear species can be grown in the ground, in others they are a container plant that spends the summer on a terrace or in a garden. It is propagated by shoot cuttings, which are made of single, cut off plant members. Cut off at the base, leave to dry for a few days, then place in a pot with a substrate to a depth of 1-2 cm.It can be a special cactus substrate or a mixture of peat, coarse sand and washed, fine gravel.

In order for the seedling to maintain an upright position, it is tied to sticks stuck in the ground. The pot with the seedling attached in this way is placed in a warm (preferably approx. 18 ° C), shaded place.

Trees and shrubs in August

We remove faded inflorescences

We remove fading flowers and inflorescences from shrubs and creepers. This treatment is designed to prevent the plants from overstraining by binding seeds.

Systematic watering

We plant green leafy plants and other plants in pots, remembering to water them systematically.

Potash fertilization

At the end of August, you can start feeding ornamental shrubs with potash fertilizers, which will contribute to faster lignification of the shoots before winter.

Orchard: strawberry plants

A strawberry plantation produces good fruit for the first 3-4 years. Therefore, it should be rejuvenated every few years. For new plantings, we use seedlings grown at the ends of runners released by mother plants. In August, most of the young seedlings grown from the mustache are already rooted.

Now we can get seedlings from them.We choose the largest, well-rooted plants and, after cutting off the runners, dig them out with a lump of soil. It is best to plant them immediately in a new place, where they will grow.Planted in summer, they will have time to root well before winter and produce a rosette of leaves. In the next year, we should already harvest the new plantation.

Organic beans yield for weeks

Due to the enormous leaf mass, tic beans require much more watering (in the main growth phase) than dwarf beans.Falling shoots of tic varieties should be regularly attached to supports, leading them clockwise. The beans will then develop faster. Harvesting begins approx. 10 weeks after sowing the seeds. The pods should be picked regularly from the beginning of ripening to the end of September. The best ones are those with the first flat seeds already developed.

Pick the fruit so as not to damage the shoots. It is best to pinch them with your fingers or cut them with a knife (scissors) directly on a thin shoot. The peeled pods break more often, making them unsuitable for blanching or freezing. A few bushes must be left for seeds.
