Fragrant winter flowers

Table of contents

The life cycle of plants is closely related to climatic conditions. They thrive in the warm months and rest in the winter. But in nature we find surprising exceptions.

Some shrubs, such as the viburnum, Chinese winterflower and laurel daffodil, in contrast to their relatives blooming in spring and summer, show their best side in winter. More than once in December, in the air of some gardens there is a pleasant scent of blooming Bodnanten's viburnum and witch hazel.Winter flowers are usually small and not very showy, but they smell great and intensely.

This phenomenon is related to the pollination process. Plants that bloom in the coldest months must attract attention with multiplied force to attract the few, still active insects.

The shrubs planted in autumn can bloom in the same winter and enjoy their fragrance. Choosing the right job is very important. For optimal protection of plants, plant them against a house wall, in front of a wall or a thick hedge, preferably with a southern exposure. In such places and in favorable, mild weather, shrubs may even accelerate flower development.

Winter-scented bushes definitely deserve special attention. It is worth choosing a place for them next to the entrance to the house or right next to the garden path, where they are clearly visible, not covered by other plants and available up close.Leafless shrubs will be perfectly exposed if we plant them in front of an always green, dark hedge.

Why do plants smell?

Flowers covered with ice crystals look very nice. The flowers are generally quite frost-resistant.For example, the extravagant threadlike flower petals of witch hazel curl up when the air temperature rises.

Fragrant shrubs beautify not only the winter garden. Cut twigs of witch hazel, winter honeysuckle or viburnum in a vase will bring a breath of spring into your home.A bouquet of yellow and orange flowers is sure to brighten up the short dark days.
