Delphinium - silhouetteThe form of growth of the delphiniumA position for a larkspurLarkspur - careThe delphinium occurs in various parts of the world and is represented by approx. 400 wild species. What we know from gardens is the result of many years of breeding work.Bred varieties, the so-called hybrids can be divided into 3 groups of hybrids: belladonna, elatum and pacific. The last one is a group of short-lived perennials, usually 2 years old.
Strongly branching belladonna hybrids reach a height of 80-140 cm and are among the lowest representatives of their kind.Their flower ears have a loose structure. The varieties from the elatum group are completely different, with the flowers arranged closely next to each other.
The shrubs reach a height of 140 to 200 cm and are among the tallest larks. Pacific hybrids grow to a height of 70-180 cm and produce lots of beautiful flowers.Stems are so loaded that they should be staked, otherwise they may break. There are also forms with semi-double flowers. Unfortunately, pacific hybrids are not as long-lived as other forms.
A characteristic feature of the delphiniums are long flower ears shimmering in shades of purple and blue, and deeply indented palm-sized leaves. Some varieties have pink or white flowers. Hybrids of belladonna and pacific bloom from June to July, and elatum - from June to August.
Blackbirds prefer sunny positions with a shadow zone within the roots in moderately moist humus clay soil.
When buying delphiniums, we should choose varieties resistant to mildew.During drought, plants should be watered regularly and abundantly. To bring perennials to flower again, faded flower shoots should be cut in late summer to a length of about 10-15 cm and additionally supplemented with fertilizer or compost.
