Varieties of lettuce for year-round cultivation

The multitude of lettuce varieties allows gardeners to grow plants carefully matched to their culinary uses.

Baby leaf lettuce

Variation

You can use either single varieties or a mixture of varieties by composing them yourself or using ready-made products.

Seeding

Depending on the variety (or seed mixture), sow directly into the ground from mid-March to early September.

Rozsada

Redundant. Undamaged interrupted seedlings can be planted elsewhere.However, this must be done immediately after the termination.

Collection

Depending on your preferences, plants are harvested in the few-leaf phase, usually 4-6 weeks after sowing.

Head lettuce

Variation

Butter green type: 'Agora', 'Atena', 'Bona', 'Dumka', 'Edyta Ozarowska', 'Ismina,' Jubilatka '; red-green: 'MIra', 'Ela', 'Redstar'.

Seeding

Early varieties are sown from March to the inspectorate or to the foil tunnel. We sow summer varieties from May and winter varieties from September.

Rozsada

Plant the seedlings from March to the inspection or foil tunnel.Later in stages from April to September, in the inspection until October.

Collection

Harvest 10-14 weeks after sowing or 7-8 weeks after planting depending on the season. Ripe heads need to be harvested in a week.

Batavia

Variation

The varieties available in Poland are referred to as Batavia type head lettuce. Among the foreign varieties, you can recommend 'Tarengo' and 'Doree de Printemps'.

Seeding

From March to mid-August (for multipallets) or directly to the ground.Cover early ground sowing with a fleece.

Rozsada

The seedlings are planted from March to the inspectorate or to the ground (then we cover them with non-woven fabric). Later, until the beginning of September, at a distance of 30x35 cm.

Collection

Harvest 8-10 weeks after sowing (when hard heads have set). Cut off the heads or tear off individual leaves.

Leaf lettuce

Variation

'Burza', 'Limona Hortag', 'Rosar'; feathery type: 'Lollo Rosa' (red-leaved), 'Lollo Bionda' (green-leaved); oak type ('Dubacek', 'Redin').

Seeding

Production of seedlings in February / March (under glass). Sowing into soil from April to mid-August.

Rozsada

Under a fleece cover or foil from mid-March, then every 4-6 weeks approximately until the beginning of September, spacing: 25x30 cm.

Collection

Harvest 12-14 weeks after sowing or 8 weeks after planting. Cut off the heads or cut off individual leaves.

Romaine lettuce

Variation

'Jota', 'Liwia', 'Tiara', 'Parris Island'.

Seeding

Production of seedlings from the beginning of March (under glass), sowing into the ground from mid-April and then from mid-June.

Rozsada

We plant seedlings from March to May. Possible later planting. Spacing 25x35 cm.

Collection

Harvest around 12 weeks after sowing and 8-10 weeks after planting (when hard heads develop).

Iceberg lettuce

Variation

Crumbly head lettuce, called iceberg lettuce: 'Bakata', 'Carmina', 'Kinga', 'Queen of Summer', 'Goplana', 'Juleczka', 'Loredo'.

Seeding

Production of seedlings under glass from March, possible sowing into the ground from April to the end of July.

Rozsada

The seedlings should be planted in April at the earliest, at the latest in mid-August, spacing: 25x30 cm.

Collection

Harvest from May to October, approx. 12 weeks after sowing and approx. 8 weeks after planting.

Late lettuce varieties

Endive

Variation

Eskariola (with smooth leaves): 'Bionda a Cuore Pieno', 'Excel'. Kędzierzawa: 'De Meaux', 'Tosca', 'Romanesca'.

Seeding

In spring cultivation, planting or sowing in April; from mid-June to July, sowing directly into the ground or production of seedlings in multipallets.

Rozsada

We plant from mid-July to mid-August.Small spacing causes spontaneous whitening of the central part of the rosette, which softens its taste.

Collection

Harvesting in spring in May / June. In cultivation for the fall harvest from September to November / December.
