Fruit bushes - blueberry cultivation

Table of contents

I grow various fruit bushes. Before I buy a new seedling, I try to look for information about the requirements of a given plant in the professional literature. First, I wonder if my garden meets the conditions for proper cultivation at all. Only then do I prepare the substrate in the right place.

Substrate for fruit shrubs

Fruit shrubs are perennial plants that should not be replanted. They have different requirements depending on the species. A successful harvest is determined, among others, by insolation, soil moisture, soil pH and soil fertility. Taking into account the pH, raspberry and blueberry prefers acidic medium (5.0-6.0).In turn, currants and gooseberries are slightly acidic or neutral (6.0-7.5).

Position and care for fruit shrubs

All fruit bushes must have good sunlight, otherwise they have little fruit or they are sour. These plants also do not like drying out, so when it is not raining for a long time, I water them regularly.

I carefully observe the leaves of the shrubs, because I can judge by their appearance whether a given plant is ill or needs fertilization. There are many fertilizers for shrubs on the market, but I recommend the best one: compost from your own plot. It is eco-friendly and you can have it for free.

In my berry plant I planted the plants singly and in groups, while the blackberries form an original hedge. Thus, fruit bushes also adorn. I trim their branches as needed. Mainly when I want to rejuvenate the bush, thin it or remove diseased shoots. Cutting old branches gives the plant a chance to grow young shoots and better access to light. If the bush is thinned, it will be well-lit and will bear more fruitful fruit.

Finally, I want to warn the impatient: a young bush, even properly cared for, can bear fruit only after a few seasons. So please do not be discouraged when there is no fruit on new plants in a given year. I collected thesefrom my blueberries only in the second season after planting the bush.

Most fruit bushes can be propagated by layering. They should be done in early spring. Loosen the soil around. Bend the last year's he althy and flexible stem, put it in a hole about 30 cm deep and cover it with soil. It is important to remove leaves and side shoots in the place where the shoot is in contact with the soil.Cut the end of the shoot to 2-3 cm and tie it to the stake.
