Shredded Maple Acer griseum is one of the more decorative maples with shaggy, scaly bark. It occurs naturally in central and western China, where it grows in mountain forests. It was brought to Europe in 1901 by E. Wilson. In Poland, the first trees were planted in the Arboretum in Kórnik in 1931.
In natural sites it grows up to 12 meters, in Europe it reaches a height of 3 to 5 meters and often takes the form of a small tree or a tall shrub. It grows very slowly, forming a wide to inversely conical crown. It often has several forking trunks at the base.
Creates a very characteristic bark of a cinnamon-brown, cinnamon or burgundy color, which already in youth is flaky with very thin patches, as in some birches. This is especially visible on older parts of the trunk . This maple has leaves composed of three small, 3-8 cm long, elliptical leaves that develop very late in spring.
In autumn they become intensely orange or scarlet, sometimes yellow. This plant has a shallow root system with numerous small roots, very sensitive to mechanical damage. It does not tolerate deep digging of the soil, reacts very favorably to mulching with bark or shredded pieces of wood.
In the garden it grows well in full sun and partial shade. He likes very humid air and warm positions. Prefers fresh, moist, acidic or neutral soils. It fits nicely under tall trees, provided that they will not compete with it for water and nutrients; it can also grow in close proximity to ponds or other bodies of water.
Due to its decorative bark, it is also suitable as a solitaire planted on lawns or on the edges of larger groups of trees.Especially in winter its beautiful bark, which looks nice with perennials or grasses.
