Autumn currant sprayingallows you to protect the bushes against diseases and pests that we struggled with during the growing season. There are no more fruits on the currants, so we can reach for effective chemical protection measures without fear of contamination of the crop intended for consumption. What to spray currants after harvest?
The basic nursing treatments in currant cultivation, performed after harvesting the fruit, include cutting currants, which allows you to remove all shoots affected by diseases and pests, as well as raking and removing fallen leaves on which pathogens can winter.Removal of leaves in the fall is especially important if we have noticed symptoms of fungal diseases on the currants. It is on the leaves left under the bushes that the fungi can overwinter and infect the plants again next spring (this is how, for example, the pathogen causing anthracnose, i.e. currant leaf fall, winters this way).
Since currants bear fruit from the end of June (very early varieties) to the beginning of August (late varieties),the date of spraying currants after the harvestis usually August, sometimes early September. So while many people refer to them asfall currant spraying , they are actually usually done at the end of summer.
If the shrubs were slightly affected by pathogens, after the currant harvest, we can continue non-chemical sprayingwith the use of weed and herb preparations (horsetail decoction, garlic extract, wormwood extract). However, if the currants have clearly suffered from fungal diseases or pests,it is worth deciding to introduce chemical protection
That is whyafter the currant harvest I recommend spraying with fungicidesTopsin M 500 SC or Magnicur Gold. It is necessary to do them if on the currant leaves we observed brown spots and premature leaf fall (currant leaf fall), brown spots with a gray center (white leaf spot) or orange warts on the underside of the leaves (white currant rust).
Willingly used in Topsin M 500 SC according to registration, it can only be used once per season. Therefore, I encourage you tospray currants with Topsin just after harvesting the fruit , and earlier, during the flowering and ripening period of the fruit, spray the currants with organic preparations
If we have observed symptoms of the spider mite (light yellow spots and discoloration on the upper side of the leaves) or large currant (unnaturally enlarged leaf buds, and then their browning and drying or the formation of deformations on the leaves),it is worth doing after harvesting the fruit.
