Table of contents

Japanese goldfish(Kerria japonica) is a hardy deciduous shrub, effective all year round. In spring and summer, we can admire its golden-yellow flowers, and in winter, when the leaves fall, shiny green shoots are revealed. What does Japanese gold look like?

Japanese goldfish is a dense deciduous shrubslowly growing through numerous root suckers. It has an upright habit and reaches 1.5-2 m in height with a similar width. The shoots of goldfish are green and smooth, they look interesting in the winter.
The leaves of the Japanese goldfish are green , oblong, egg-shaped, double-serrated, tipped with a sharp point. The golden yellow flowers appear singly or in several from April to May.Japanese goldfish repeats flowering in summer .

For growing in the garden, we recommend3 varieties of Japanese goldfish :

  • Japanese goldfish 'Golden Guinea'- with large cream flowers,
  • Japanese zloty 'Pleniflora'- full-flowered variety,
  • Japanese goldfish 'Picta'- with gray-green leaves with a white edge, a variety of gold-lined goldfish with limited growth, recommended for smaller gardens (up to 1 m high)

Japanese Złotlin - cultivation

Growing Japanese goldfish is very simpleThis shrub tolerates all permeable, not too dry soils. It feels best on fresh humus and sufficiently moist soil.Złotlin tolerates light shading but thrives best in sunny places

Złotlin is not completely resistant to low temperatures , but it regenerates quickly when it freezes, producing new shoots. In areas with cooler climates, it is worthto plant goldfish under the cover of a wall or fenceAt the beginning of the growing season, it is recommended to apply a multi-component fertilizer for flowering plants. Japanese goldfish is rarely attacked by diseases or pests.
Złotlin should be planted singly or several in groups in loose groups , in large open spaces. In small gardens, the 'Picta' variety of gold may be planted, providing an interesting color accent.

Japanese zloty - trimming

Japanese goldfish requires regular pruning , which will guarantee annual flowering and a compact habit of the bush. Immediately after the flowers have flowered, which usually happens in June, shorten the blooming shoots. It is best to trim just above the new strong side shoot. New flowers will appear on these shoots in a year, and some of them will bloom this year, repeating flowering in summer.
Althoughthe basic term for goldlining is the period after flowering , shrub it is also worth watching just after winter. Then we cut out black shoots that have frozen. They are cut close to the ground or just above a he althy bud. During this period, it is also worthcutting out the oldest branches, on which flowering is already weakened , because goldenrod blooms best on young shoots.

Note!
Remember aboutremoving the root suckers produced by the goldfishIt must be done on an ongoing basis, because when they become deeply rooted, it will be difficult. It is best to stop them with a spade, digging up the entire regrowth, including the roots. The dug out suckers will be useful for the propagation of Japanese goldfish

Japanese goldfish - reproduction

Japanese goldfish can be propagated by semi-woody cuttings and by root suckers.
Japanese goldfish propagation from semi-woody cuttingsis performed at the beginning or mid-summer. Cut cuttings 8-10 cm long with a heel from semi-woody side shoots. Then the seedling is planted in a mixture of peat and sand in a ratio of 1: 1. Additionally, you can immerse the collected cuttings in a rooting for semi-woody cuttings.
On the other hand, multiplication of gold from the root suckersis performed in the fall and it is the easiest way to obtain new shrubs. In order to propagate from goldfish by suckers, the root growth should be gently undermined and separated from the mother plant. Plant the obtained suckers in the target place at a depth of about 5 cm, and in spring new gold shoots should start to grow from the dormant eyes.
