Gardening tools are almost always necessary when setting up, tidying up or maintaining a garden. Because it is impossible to mow the lawn without a mower, cut bushes without shears and secateurs or dig the soil without a spade or a rotary tiller. We use a lot of tools in the garden and it is necessary to have a place to store them. One from which we will have convenient and quick access to the necessary tools, but also discreet, aesthetically integrated into the garden space. It turns out that in a very simple way, we can create such a place by observing the solutions used in beautiful and stylish English gardens!
The report on the storage of garden tools was prepared by Rafał Okułowicz, who has been advising on what to do to make the garden beautiful and he althy for over 15 years, publisher PoradnikOgrodniczy.pl
Read the report on how to store gardening tools and find out about our readers' testimonies of different storage locations. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each solution? Which is best for you? How quickly and easily can you create a convenient, practical and aesthetic place to store tools in your garden?Usually when it comes to a place to store garden tools, you think about a separate corner in the basement of the house or in the garage, in the garden gazebo, an old shed, if we have one, or a wooden tool house, which is a separate building. While tools can be stored like this, each of these solutions has some drawbacks.
A few words about storing tools in the garage were told by Mr. Jerzy, who owns a house with a garden in the suburbs of Krakow:
My car did not occupy the entire garage area, so there were no problems in the garage with two more bicycles and basic garden tools, such as a saw, pruner, spade, rake, hoe, etc. The mower occupied the most space. Even then, there was a problem with the tools being stuck in the back of the garage. This allowed the car to drive in and out freely. Heals when the car was standing in the garage, the tools had to be taken out very carefully not to scratch the car. To remove the mower, the car had to be driven up the driveway.
In addition, in the following years it turned out that the lawn could not be kept in good condition without a scarifier, and for the winter we decided to replace the used snow shovel with an electric snow blower. With the arrival of garden equipment, there was not enough space in the garage. There was a dilemma - should all tools and gardening equipment or a car stand here? Everything just didn't fit anymore! It was then that I realized that a separate place was needed for storing garden tools. The more that the garage is at the front of the house, and most of the gardening work is done at the back of the building, there is the main part of the garden (there is only a front garden in the front). The constant running around the house with garden equipment was starting to annoy us a bit.
Garage is usually not a good place for garden tools.
With a little carelessness, it is easy to scratch the car.
From the garage, we usually also have not very comfortable access to the garden.
A much more convenient solution seemed to have in his garden Mr. Janusz near Poznań, the owner of a recreational plot outside the city:
Together with my wife, Teresa, we decided to put up a wooden gazebo on the plot, or actually a garden house. We spent whole weekends on the plot, so there was a place to sleep. We also hid our garden tools in the gazebo. Initially, this solution worked, but we quickly noticed that in this way a lot of dirt, soil and felt-tip pen flaking from tools was applied to the gazebo. There was also a problem when I had to clean the mower and carry out maintenance. It rained a little on that day, and I couldn't do it in the gazebo because everything would be in grease. After all, the entrance to the gazebo was also via stairs. Seemingly only a few steps, but carrying the tools, especially for my wife, was a bit of a problem. The scale of bitterness overflowed when our gazebo was broken into, just like on a neighboring plot. The thieves then took a grass trimmer.
The opinion of Mr. Janusz and his wife Teresa seems to be shared by the majority of people who own a gazebo on the plot.Because usually when I walk around the allotment gardens, apart from gazebos, I also see separate houses for tools or tool lockers added to the arbors. So the inside of the gazebo is definitely not a good place to store garden tools.
In both described cases, the owners of the gardens decided that they would need a separate, small house for gardening tools. It is best if it is nicely integrated into the garden space or discreetly hidden. However, it must provide quick and convenient access to all tools and equipment used in the garden. This type of wooden house was owned by Mrs. Elżbieta, who lives in a small town near Gdańsk. Here is her report:
My husband built a small wooden house at the back of the garden. We bought ready-made elements to construct a house. It was supposed to be relatively cheap, so we chose a pine wood cabin. The assembly of the house was not complicated, but it took a week to complete its full splendor. The wooden house fits nicely into our garden, where there is no shortage of wooden furniture and other details, such as wooden pots or grids for vines. I myself helped my husband while painting the house and securing it with impregnation agent. At that time, I did not think that the activities related to the maintenance and protection of wood would have to be repeated …Initially, the wooden house fulfilled its task perfectly, we were both satisfied with it. However, after 3 years, my husband and I found out that it does not look as nice as it did when it was new. It quickly lost its aesthetic appearance, it was necessary to re-impregnate and repaint the wood. I was a little disappointed with this - a comfortable and practical toolhouse was supposed to make it easier for me to care for the garden and use gardening tools. However, the necessity to preserve the wood and repaint the house meant that, in addition to certain comfort, it also caused additional work. If I had to make a decision today - either I would invest with my husband in a house made of high-quality wood that does not require so much maintenance (only these costs …) or I would look for another solution that allows convenient storage of garden tools.
Wooden garden house for tools without regular maintenance
and securing the wood will quickly lose its charm
As all three of the above examples have shown - a properly separated, convenient and easily accessible place for storing garden tools is usually a necessity. If a place for storing tools is to facilitate and save our time, a wooden house for tools, which requires regular maintenance, will not always turn out to be the optimal solution.
There is also the problem of securing a wooden house against burglary. When I was doing a survey on the storage of garden tools by our readers, there were also such voices that in a wooden house for tools or in a garden gazebo, only handy garden tools of less value could be stored. And the most valuable ones are locked at home (eg.in the basement) and taken to the garden only when needed. This, however, requires planning and anticipation of what may be useful in the garden on a given day. And it is not so bad when someone has a backyard garden, it is worse when we go to a garden plot located further away and forget to take the necessary gardening equipment with us. Keeping tools in two different places, depending on their value, is therefore not always convenient and practical. So what are some other ideas for tool sheds? What kind of house will be easy to build, comfortable and practical? Is it possible to have a house, the durability of which will allow us to rest and forget about all work related to its maintenance, and the solid structure will be unbeatable for burglars? And to meet all our expectations - which tool house will fit nicely into our garden, ensuring aesthetics and style?
As it turns out - the answer to these questions is quite simple. You can find it looking at the beautifully decorated and charming English gardens.
The so-called backyard gardening which means growing a backyard garden. The courtyards at the back of the house are quite characteristic of the local buildings. These are often not very large closed areas, limited on each side either by a high fence or by the walls of adjoining houses. They can be arranged as ornamental gardens with a seating corner or gardens with vegetables and herbs, often also called kitchen gardens.Of course, their character depends on the owner, but it must be admitted that the islanders can transform these seemingly not very grateful spaces into beautiful gardens. A common element of the development in these gardens is a small house or an extension for garden tools. "
Typical British garden at the back of the house
It is generally known, however, that it rains a lot on the islands. Anyone who went on a trip to London for a few days must surely hit the rain. In such a climate, garden sheds for tools must be very resistant to moisture, fungi and molds.
It is out of the need to have durable, practical and neat huts for gardening tools and the love and passion of English gardeners that the British brand Yardmaster was created, offering garden houses for tools made of … metal!Probably the very wording metal houses does not sound the best and makes you shiver … It probably evokes associations with metal jaws that we once saw in bazaars … but nothing could be more wrong!"
"Well, it is the metal structure that makes it possible to combine comfort, functionality, durability and aesthetics. Just think with what finesse and precision are the bodies of modern cars, which delight beautiful limousines or fast speeders.Over the years, no corrosion dare to touch them! Isn&39;t that what you expect from a garden tool house - comfort, functionality, durability and aesthetics?
"This garden tool house is at your fingertips! You can observe this idea of English gardeners and do like Jerzy, the protagonist of the first of the above-mentioned stories:
As I mentioned, there was not enough space in the garage for a car, our bikes and more and more garden tools. Together with my wife, we decided to find a separate place for storing garden equipment. We chose a convenient location at the back of the garden, from where there is easy and quick access to discounts with vegetables and the orchard area, which require the most care. Since there was already a place, you had to choose a tool house, which will stand there.
We were looking for something relatively cheap, functional, aesthetic and durable for years. I heard from neighbors that a wooden house is not the best solution because it requires maintenance, painting and regular protection of the wood.In turn, building a brick structure of the cottage terrified me. I can't do it myself - you would have to hire a bricklaying team. It will all take time and cost a lot …
Like most people these days, I decided to look for solutions on the Internet. And I found the offer of Yardmaster metal garden houses. In the photos, they looked very aesthetic, and the seller assured them about their durability and easy assembly. And the British brand Yardmaster evoked rather good associations. After all, the English are solid and have a sense of taste.
However, I have never had such a house, and in Poland they are not yet known. So I asked my eldest son to check the reviews in English on the internet. English about Yardmaster garden houses.
After all, the positive opinions of users of such houses prompted me to buy. The best delivery conditions in Poland were offered by the Ogrodosfera.pl store, so this is where I placed my order. We received the house after 3 days, everything is packed in a cardboard box.It took two people to assemble it, so I asked my son for help again. We only had time in the afternoons, after work. But it was enough for the finished house to be ready in just 2 days!
I chose the stylish and elegant Yardmaster Brown house, the walls of which are made of metal panels in a color imitating wood. When my wife, Alicja, saw a ready-made toolhouse, she could not hide her delight - Well, gentlemen, in two days you built such a house? You are my two hands of gold!
The Yardmaster Brown garden house consists of metal panels with a wood-like finish, which makes it easy to integrate the house into the garden architecture. Unlike wooden structures, it does not require any maintenance!
It was hard to be surprised by Alice. The wood-colored house fits perfectly into the garden and provided easy access to all the tools needed to care for the garden. As Jerzy added - I did not even mention to my wife that it would not need to be maintained or painted, unlike a wooden house. The maintenance issue could simply be forgotten!
