Tansyis a perennial from the Asteraceae family, common in Poland near fields and roads. Thehealing effect of tansy , used as a herbal raw material, was once appreciated. Currently, the use of tansy in the gardenis primarily pest control, although it is worth knowing that tansy also has decorative varieties. See how to make liquid manure, extract andtansy decoctionand how to apply and use them to fight pests.
Tansy in the garden (in my case it grows right under the fence)
Tansy(Tanacetum vulgare) used to be culinary (for example, its flower baskets were baked in dough) and as a medicinal plant. However, at the doses that tansy showed therapeutic effects, it was usually also poisonous to humans. Therefore, nowadays, tansy is not used in the kitchen at all, and in natural medicine and cosmetics, its use is rather small (mainly externally, to combat skin parasites).
Very widethe use of tansycan be found in the garden and in the household, where we can use it to fight pests such as: the Colorado potato beetle, flies, ants, mosquitoes, ticks, caterpillars harmful butterflies and moths.Tansy mainly works against these pests because of the camphor-like smell , which many insects simply hate.
In early springtansy preparations are sprayed on trees and shrubsin order to destroy wintering forms of pests (aphid eggs and spider mites). So we can use it instead of paraffin oil contained in Promanal 60 EC and Treol 770 EC. Certainly, it will be a cheaper solution than purchasing these products, although perhaps not so highly effective.Tansy preparationscan also be used to combat certain plant diseases, such as powdery mildew and rust. Due to the high content of potassium, tansy should be added to the compostThis plant also has a beneficial effect on fruit trees growing nearby.
It is also worth paying attention todecorative varieties of tansy , which can be planted in flower beds. Examples are tansy 'De Candolle' with double pinnate leaves and tansy 'Silver Lace' with silver-leaved leaves.
The protection of garden plants usesgreen parts of tansy and umbels of its inflorescencesTansy herb is best harvested during its full flowering period, i.e. from July to September. They are dried at a temperature of up to 35 ° C, bearing in mind that the tansy inflorescences dry very slowly and have to be dried for a long time. Store the dried material in a closed container.
Note!Keep the tansy dry out of the reach of children, as little ones can easily poison it.
Tansy manure- 1 kg of cut tansy leaves is poured with 10 liters of water and allowed to ferment, which may take from 2 to 4 weeks. It should be mixed once a day. When the solution stops foaming and becomes clear, it will be ready for use.
Without dilution, tansy manure is used to fight ants in the garden - it is poured over the paths of ants and anthills. Tansy manure can also be used to water the ground to control grubs, wireworms and other soil pests. The grubs irritated by tansy rise to the ground and are eaten by the birds. At a dilution of 1:15, we use tansy slurry in the growing season as a spray on aphids.
Tansy extract- 300 g of fresh herb or 30 g of dried tansy should be poured with 10 liters of cold water and left for 24 hours (a light foam will form). Then strain and dilute with water in a ratio of 1: 2. When diluted, it is suitable for combating aphids, cottonwood, aphids, butterfly caterpillars such as apple tree tent, cabbage moth, cruciferous moth, fruit larvae and onion cream. You can also spray on rust (fungal disease).
Good to know!Tansy extract should be used on the day of its preparation or the next day. It cannot be stored. Optionally, any unused amount can be left to ferment into slurry. However, you can store the tansy decoction. If the hot stock is closed in a jar, it will be suitable for storage for a period of 3 months.
Tansy decoction- 500g of shredded tansy herb or 75g of herbs pour 10 liters of water and soak for 24 hours. Then cook for 20 minutes. After cooling down, strain. Before use, dilute 1: 5 with water.
Tansy decoction is usedto combat fleas in seedlings of cruciferous vegetables, greenhouse whitefly, flowers and ants. In the cultivation of strawberries, it helps to fight strawberries and strawberry mites. From fungal diseases, it can reduce the development of powdery mildew.
People who cannot prepare tansy macerates on their own can buyready-made tansy preparations , available in garden stores. An example of this type of preparation is Wrotycz BroBio Ogród, which containsfermented tansy extractenriched with beneficial microorganisms. This extract is used in a similar way to tansy slurry.
