Semi-woody cuttings - how to pick, root and plant

Table of contents

In the period from July to the beginning of September, we can collect trees and shrubssemi-woody cuttingsSuch cuttings take root a bit more difficult than herbaceous cuttings, but they are more durable because their tissues they are more lignified (they lose water more slowly and do not wilt so quickly). Half-woody cuttings are taken when the shoots are still fresh and green, but they start to turn brown at the base. It is an excellent method of reproduction of evergreen deciduous shrubs, as well as jasmine and shrubs and Japanese climbing vetch.

How to pick semi-woody cuttings

Saplings are taken from one-year old shoots, the tops of which are still soft, but the lower parts are already woody. For seedlings, we choose non-flowering side shoots. Cut the shoot just above the knot so that the seedling is about 15 to 20 cm long. Then tear off the leaves from the bottom of the cut off shoot and remove the soft tip above the leaf. After these treatments, the length of the seedling should be about 10 cm.

How to rooting and planting harvested cuttings

To facilitaterooting of semi-woody cuttingsthe lower parts of the shoots are immersed in the rooting agent and then planted in pots filled with finely ground pine bark or a mixture of equal parts of garden peat and coarse sand. We place the seedlings in the holes at a depth of 1/3 of the seedling's length, at such distances between the seedlings so that their leaves do not touch each other. Then, knead the substrate and water it abundantly. Water with a solution of the antifungal agent can be used.
After planting the seedlings, cover the pots with foil (preferably on a wire frame so that the foil does not touch the plants directly) and place them in a quiet and shaded place. Seedlings can winter in a greenhouse or a cold inspection (remember to protect them from frost). The cuttings will take root faster if they are heated from below.

Note! Immediately after planting the seedlings, label them so that you know where the individual species and varieties are located.

Caring for semi-woody cuttings

Whensemi-woody cuttingstake root, harden them (seedlings spending the winter in a multiplier heated from below should take root before spring comes). To do this, make a few holes in the foil covering the seedlings to ventilate them a little. One week later, cut the foil open over a larger area, and remove it completely after another week. Rooted cuttings can be planted into separate pots with a diameter of about 8 cm.The seedlings require constant care. You have to keep the substrate moist all the time. You can also feed the seedlings with liquid fertilizer.
When the growing season comes and it warms up outside, the seedlings can be transplanted into larger pots or directly into the ground (however, if the seedlings rooted more slowly, you will have to wait for until autumn).See also:
