Strawberry care after harvest

The strawberries have already finished fruiting, but this does not mean that we can stop cultivating them. The further condition and he alth of the plants, as well as the survival of winter and fruiting in the next year, depend on the work doneon the strawberry bed after the fruit harvest .
Therefore, after harvesting the strawberries, we continue to weed , and also remove the remaining rotten fruits and leaves with symptoms of fungal disease.

Also remove sprouting runnersso that they do not weaken the mother plant. If we want to obtain new strawberry cuttings, some of the stolons can be left to root (closer to autumn, they can be cut off and transplanted to a new place). Otherwise, we remove all runners. It is also worthto gently loosen the soil between the rows of strawberriesIf you mulch the straw beds with straw, you can mix the top layer of the earth with the remaining mulch, which will gradually decompose and fertilize the soil.

In practiceremoval of old leaves is done about 2-3 weeks after the strawberry harvest(usually at the turn of July and August) by trimming all plants to a height of about 5 cm . Cut leaves and other debris should be ruffled from the flower beds and removed. This treatment should not be delayed so that the strawberries have enough time to produce new leaves and buds before the onset of winter.
We perform this pruning in the case of 2-year-old and 3-year-old strawberriesIt should be abandoned in the case of young, one-year-old strawberries, and in the case of 4-year-old and older plants, it is worth considering eliminating the cultivation and planting new strawberry seedlings ( strawberries bear fruit well for a maximum of 4 years).

Note!We do not trim all the shoots in the case of strawberries that repeat fruiting, because those on the current shoots will still bear fruit until autumn. Here, we only remove runners, shoots and fruits with symptoms of diseases, and weed the soil between plants.

Fertilizing strawberries after the harvest

The period after the strawberry harvest is a good time to apply the next dose of fertilizersIt is especially important to supplement, first of all, nitrogen and potassium, as well as phosphorus, calcium and magnesium.Fertilizing strawberries after harvestingwill make it easier for plants to produce new shoots and leaves after pruning, as well as new flower buds, which has a large impact on fruiting in the next year. Compost or mineral fertilizers can be used. When deciding on mineral fertilization, choose a specialmulti-ingredient fertilizer for strawberriesThe commonly used Azofoska can also be used. In the case of the latter, a dose of 10 dag / m² is usually enough. Remember to finish fertilizing strawberries with nitrogen-containing fertilizers by mid-August at the latest. Nitrogen-free fertilizers applied later will unnecessarily stimulate the plants to grow and make it difficult to come to rest during winter. these improve frost resistance and make it easier for plants to prepare for winter) as well as with microelements. Here, a recommendable fertilizer is bas alt flour of natural origin. This ecological fertilizer, in addition to its rich mineral composition, contains a lot of silica, which strengthens plants and makes them resistant to diseases. For the first time, use the flour in the amount of 1.5 - 3 kg per 10m². In the following years of cultivation, the dosage of bas alt flour can be reduced to 200-300g per 10m².

Spraying strawberries after harvest

In the protection of strawberries against diseases and pests, the above-mentioned cutting of leaves about 2-3 weeks after harvesting is especially important. This definitelyhelps to reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests on strawberriesand in amateur crops it is usually sufficient, especially if during the flowering and ripening period of the fruit, the plants were protected with the biological preparation Polywersum WP, the use of which we already wrote in an article on fighting gray mold, among others on strawberries.
However, if the diseases occurred despite the use of protective treatments, thenPolyversum WP spraying should also be performed after harvesting the fruitand cutting the strawberry leaves. This remedy is helpful against many strawberry diseases such as: gray mold, leathery fruit rot, powdery mildew, white leaf spot, red leaf spot in strawberry.

When deciding to use Polyversum WP, however, remember that according to the label of the product, it is recommended to spray not more than 3 strawberries during the growing season. If we have already used up this limit, it is worth choosing one of the more potent fungicides for post-harvest spraying. This is especially important if the fruit is massively rotting and moldy (gray mold) or there are stains on the leaves, indicating white or red spot on the strawberry leaves.A preparation that can be used against strawberry diseases is Signum 33 WG. This remedy is highly effective against a wide range of strawberry diseases. We can use it in the case of gray mold, white leaf spot and powdery mildew.Use Signum 33 WG on strawberries in the amount of 18 g dissolved in 5-7.5 l of water, which is enough for spraying 100m² of strawberry beds.

If ourstrawberries have been damaged by pests , such as the strawberry mite, which sucks sap from leaves, flower buds and flowers, spray against this pest as well. We can use Ortus 05 SC for this purpose. If the strawberries were damaged by swollen glands that gnawed the edges of the leaves, or we simply noticed the presence of beetles among the plants, spraying should be applied to the roots of strawberries, which destroys the beetle larvae in the soil.
, we can use the natural P-Drakol preparation. It contains microorganisms that hinder the existence of soil pests, thus contributing toreducing the occurrence of problems such as nematodes and grubs It works great on lawns, as well as in the cultivation of strawberries.
