Protection of vegetables against diseases and pests

Table of contents

Vegetables from independent cultivation in garden plots usually taste better than those from store shelves and are not contaminated with pesticides. However, even in the most well-kept cultivation, we are unable to avoid diseases and pests. See what it should look likeprotection of vegetables against diseases and pestsin order not to lose the taste and he alth benefits of the food and at the same time not to destroy the crops by pathogens.

The protection of vegetables on the plot should be carried out using natural methods so that our vegetables are not contaminated with chemicals

We strongly recommend the use ofecological methods of vegetable protectionand avoiding chemical preparations, which are often not indifferent to our he alth. If we decide tochemical protection of vegetables , we must follow all precautionary rules, follow the manufacturer's instructions given on the product's packaging and label, and above all, observe the grace periods.

Basic methodsecological protection of vegetables in plots :

  • growing varieties of vegetables resistant to and not very susceptible to diseasesis the first step that we should take when shopping in a garden store, thus we will reduce the costs associated with the need to use other protection methods ,
  • appropriateorganic fertilization , bearing in mind that not all vegetables can be fertilized abundantly, especially with manure. Abundant fertilization is recommended for the cultivation of cruciferous vegetables, cucumbers and tomatoes, but it should be avoided in the cultivation of most root and onion vegetables,
  • rotation, i.e.avoiding growing the same vegetables in the same places in subsequent years , thanks to which we will avoid attacking plants by harmful organisms living in the soil, a one-year break in the cultivation of the same vegetables in a given place can bring noticeable results and increase the yield,

  • enrichment of vegetable crop rotation with plants grown ongreen fertilizer ,
  • co-cultivation, i.e. growing in the vicinity of vegetable species that have a positive effect on each other andavoiding the proximity of vegetables that have a negative impact , e.g. for celery it is beneficial to be in the neighborhood cucumbers or cabbage, while avoiding tomatoes with cucumbers or carrots with cruciferous vegetables.
  • avoiding excessive density of cultivated vegetables , because plants grown in airy positions are less often infected by pathogens, larger spacing between plants hinders the spread of infection,
  • removing plants attacked by diseases and pestsand catching pests (e.g. into traps), thanks to which we prevent their further spread,
  • usenatural preparations increasing the natural immunity of plants , such as, for example, horsetail decoction, which is helpful in fighting powdery mildew, or garlic extract, which prevents diseases mushroom,
  • If we decide to fight infection directly with specific preparations, instead of chemicals, choose biopreparations, such as Bioczos or Biosept Active.
