Onion creamis a pest that damages mainly onions, as well as garlic and leeks. It causes weakening of plant growth, and in the bulbs we can find corridors hollowed out by larvae. Cream onion - cream larvae in onion

What does onion cream look like?

An adult onion beetle insectis an olive-gray fly, 6-7 mm long. However, the greatest losses in crops are caused by legless, creamy or yellowishonion cream larvae , reaching up to 7 mm in length. The larvae damage underground parts of plants and dig through corridors in the onion.

Two generations of trash appear a yearFirst generation flies fly out at the end of April and lay their eggs at the base of plants or in the ground. The eggs hatch the larvae of the first generation of onion cream, feeding from May to the beginning of July. The second generation flies appear in mid-July, and the larvae feed from the end of July until harvest. They can also be transported to storage rooms along with infected vegetables.

Symptoms of feeding onion cream

Onion cream(Latin Delia antiqua) mainly damages sowing onions and spring onions, as well as garlic, shallots, chives and leeks.
The cream causes the greatest losses when the sowing plants are in the 2 - 6 leaf stage. Damaged plants do not develop roots and the tissue rots from below. The chives wilt, turn yellow and dry.
The larvae of the second generation of onion creamappear during the drying up of the chives (from the end of July until the onion harvest). During this time, they damage the heel and penetrate between the fleshy scales of the onion, boring corridors in them. Damaged plants start to rot and are not suitable for storage.

Ecological control of onion cream

The onion cream hibernates in the soilin the form of field beans. So that the pest does not spread to the crop in the following year, it is recommended to change the position of growing vegetables attacked by the trash. It is best not to grow onion vegetables in the same row for the next 4 years, using vegetable crop rotation, and locate the newly established row of onion as far away from the previous one.
It is also worthto grow onions in rows alternating with carrots , which benefits both vegetables. The significantly different aromas of these vegetables confuse pests and make it difficult for them to find their favorite vegetable. And sothe presence of carrots reduces the number of onion cream , and the smell of the onion scares off the carrot shrub, which is a carrot pest.

We can also spray with plant preparations, prepared on the basis of weeds and herbs. However, it should be remembered that such natural plant protection products are effective as long as we use them regularly and preventively, and not only after the appearance of the pest. The onion cream has a deterrent effecttansy extract and infusion of wormwood.
To prepare an extract of tansy, 300 g of fresh herb or 30 g of dried tansy should be poured with 10 liters of cold water and left for 24 hours (a light foam will form). Then strain and dilute with water in a ratio of 1: 2.Unfortunately, the extract must be used immediately after its preparation, which is a bit troublesome, because spraying against the litter must be repeated, preferably every week.
Therefore, more practical in combating onion creamis the preparation of an infusion of mugwort. For this purpose, pour 300g of fresh herb or 30g of dried herbs into 10 liters of water and cook for 30 minutes. We close the hot one in a jar and then we can store it for a few sprays.

Good to knowThe infusion of mugwort wormwood also scares off the carrot flake, a pest of carrots. So if we decided to plant rows of onions alternating with carrots, the mugwort infusion will be beneficial for both vegetables.

We can also catch onion flieson yellow sticky boards. The use of boards alone does not bring any noticeable results (they are mainly used to signal the flight of flies) but it helps in combination with otherecological methods of combating onion cream
After harvesting, the soil should be deeply dug. Thensome garbage larvae will be brought to the ground and destroyedby low temperatures or eaten by birds visiting the garden.

Chemical treatment of onion cream

Forchemical control of onion creamin allotment and home gardens we can use two insecticides. These are Karate Zeon 050 CS and Mospilan 20 SP. This is obviously a last resort, but it may be necessary if we have not used the above-mentionedecological methods to prevent the appearance of onion cream , and we want to save our vegetables.
When Karate Zeon 050 CS is used, spraying should be done during the first generation of flies, i.e. during the flowering of lilac. Repeat the spraying after 10-14 days. A maximum of two sprayings can be performed during the growing season.Karate Zeon 050 CS against onion creamuse 1.2 ml of the agent dissolved in 4-5 liters of water. This amount is enough to spray 100m² of the crop.
When using Mospilan 20 SP on onions and garlic, spraying should be done when the pest appears, from the phase of the clearly developed first leaf to the formation of the edible parts of the plants. Repeat the spraying after 10 days. Toprepare the spray against the litter , dissolve 2g of the agent in 2-5 liters of water, which is enough to spray 100m² of beds.
On the other hand, leeks can be sprayed with Mospilan 20 SP when the onion creamappears, from phase 1 of the true leaf, no later than until the target weight of vegetables is reached. Spraying should be repeated after 7 days, and in the season no more than 2 sprays.
