Cypress(Chamaecyparis) is a genus of plants belonging to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). Among the we alth of species and varieties of cypress trees and shrubs of various colors and shapes can be found. Their colors range from golden yellow, through blue to green. Pea cypress

The pea cypress( Chamaecyparis pisifera ) is an evergreen, long-lived tree native to Honshu Island in Japan. The size of the pea cypress cones resembles a pea - hence its species name.
Although the pea cypress grows slowly, in nature it can grow to an impressive size, reaching approx. 50 m in height. Its soil and moisture requirements are not too high, but it grows best in sunny, sheltered positions. It is exposed to freezing in windy places. For gardens,dwarf varieties of pea cypressare recommended, reaching smaller sizes than the species.

Pea cypress 'Boulevard'- a popular variety with a conical, irregular habit. The growth rate is low, reaching approx. 2 m in height at the age of 10. The gray-blue foliage turns gray-brown in winter, it is soft and non-prickly.The plant grows best in fertile and sufficiently moist soil, in sunny, sheltered places. The needles inside the bush may turn brown and fall off. A variety recommended for small gardens, suitable for forming.

Pea cypress 'Filifera aurea'- shrub in the shape of a wide cone, growing up to 4 m in height. It has a golden-yellow color of scales that lasts all year round. The variety is ideal as a solitaire for a small garden and a rockery. It is resistant to polluted air, so it can be planted in cities.

Pea cypress 'Filifera Nana'- dwarf, slow-growing variety of cypress, reaching a height of 1.5 m. Dark green color of scales. Recommended for small gardens and rockeries. It is perfect for planting at the edge of a pond due to overhanging shoots forming a fountain.

Pea cypress 'Sungold'- dwarf variety with a spherical, flattened habit. It grows slowly, reaching approx. 60 cm in height and slightly wider after 10 years. Attractive, overhanging, stringy shoots are greenish-yellow in color. Some of the twigs are completely yellow, others are mixed colors. It tolerates strong sunlight. The soil and moisture requirements are average.Quite resistant to frost. Suitable for growing in pots, looks good in rock gardens and moors.

Pea cypress 'White Beauty'- initially spherical, then egg-shaped variety. The growth rate is low, after 10 years it grows to approx. 80 cm in height and similar width. The pure species is a tree with a narrow, conical crown, growing up to 20-30 m in height.Garden varieties can differ significantly from it.

Lawson's Cypress 'Alumii'- a variety with a conical shape and quite fast growth rate. At the age of 10, it can reach a height of approx. 3 m, while under favorable conditions it can reach up to approx. 10 m. Shoots are gray-blue, in young plants set vertically. It grows best in a sunny position, sheltered from frosty winds. It has average soil and moisture requirements. The variety is recommended for hedges and as a solitaire.

Lawson's Cypress 'Columnaris'- has a conical and compact habit. At the age of 10, it grows to approx. 3 m in height and approx. 80 cm in width. Vertically arranged shoots take on a gray-blue shade. It does not have high soil and moisture requirements, but prefers sunny positions. It is one of the varieties most resistant to low temperatures, but it can also freeze in harsh winters. Urban pollution does not harm it, therefore it is used:in for planting parks.

nutkajski cypress

This evergreen and long-lived conifer is native to North America. In nature, the Nutcai cypress grows up to approx. 35 m. The branches and the top of the crown characteristically overhang, which makes it look impressive, weeping. The brown bark is peeling with narrow stripes. It is quite tolerant of soil but likes sunny places.

Nutcaya Cypress 'Glauca'- a cone-shaped tree with overhanging shoot tips and a dangling top. It grows quickly, at the age of 10, reaching approx. 3 m in height and 1.5 m in width.Under favorable conditions it can grow up to 20 m. The color of foliage is green-blue. It has average soil requirements but likes moist soil in sunny and sheltered places. Sufficient frost resistance. Recommended for planting as a solitaire or as a hedge.

Nutcracker Cypress 'Pendula'- tree with loosely branching branches with an impressive, weeping form. The hanging side shoots are dark green in color. The growth rate is quite fast, after 10 years it reaches approx. 3 m in height, eventually reaching several meters. The most favorable place for him is a place with high air humidity, with fertile and moist soil. Position from sunny to slightly shaded and sheltered. It looks most beautiful as a solitaire.

It grows best in warmer regions, in places sheltered from frosty winds. In natural places, this species is close to the threat of extinction.

Japanese Cypress 'Gracilis'- has a conical, irregular shape. At the age of 10, it grows to about 1.5 m in height, ultimately it can reach 4 m. Dark green shoots are short and wavy. Needs a sunny position to slightly shaded with fertile and moist soil. This variety is sufficiently frost resistant. It also comes in a pear form. It looks interesting in Japanese gardens.

Japanese Cypress 'Nana Gracilis'- is a dwarf, slow-growing variety up to 1.5 m high. Dark green fan-shaped shoots are dense, short and shiny. Same requirements as for the 'Gracilis' cultivars.Young plants should be covered before winter. You can also grow in pots.

Japanese Cypress 'Tsatsumi'- a variety with a wide, spherical and irregular shape. Growth rate low, at the age of 10 it reaches approx. 60 cm in height and width. Dark green shoots are threadlike and twisted. The best place for cultivation is sunny and sheltered with fertile and moist soil. Suitable for planting in containers, looks interesting in Japanese and rock gardens.

Japanese Cypress 'Drath'- has a narrow conical shape and thick, erect, gray-green shoots. It grows quite slowly, reaching approx. 2 m in height at the age of 10. It prefers fertile and moist soil in sunny or semi-shaded but sheltered positions. It can freeze in severe winters. It regenerates well after cutting.Recommended for small gardens.

Japanese Cypress 'Nana Aurea'- slowly growing, dwarf variety with a conical, irregular shape. After 10 years, it grows to about 50 cm in height and similar width. Attractive, golden-yellow shoots are fan-shaped. The soil for cultivation should be fertile and sufficiently moist, sunny to slightly shaded position. Young plants should be covered for the winter. It looks good in rock gardens, Japanese gardens and in pots.
