Spraying tomatoes with yeastagainst potato blight is a famous recipe recommended by organic gardeners. It can also help protect other vegetables such as cucumbers and potatoes, and the preparation of this spray is very simple. Seehow to make a yeast spray for cucumbers and tomatoes , and read research and opinions onusing yeast to protect plantsagainst fungal diseases!
Yeast can be used to spray tomatoes
Cucumbers and tomatoes are very popular vegetablesand are eagerly planted in home and allotment gardens. Unfortunately, their cultivation can cause many problems. Especiallyeasily fall victim to fungal diseasesIn the case of cucumbers, downy mildew of cucumbers is a real nightmare, while the cultivation of tomatoes is decimated by potato blight. Without spraying against these fungi, it is difficult to cultivate successfully.
In order to reduce the use of pesticides, it is worth reaching for natural methods of protection, among which thespraying with yeast is often recommended . Its preparation is very simple and not as time-consuming as, for example, in the case of the famous nettle manure.
Toprepare a yeast spray for cucumbers and tomatoes , you only need to dissolve one 100g cube of baker's yeast in 10 liters of water. After the yeast has completely dissolved, the mixture is ready to be poured into the sprayer. It is only important to use fresh yeast, sold in cubes. For the best effectiveness, spraying tomatoes and cucumbers with yeast should be repeated every weekIt is best to use it regularly as a preventive measure to avoid the appearance of diseases on tomatoes and cucumbers. However, if we did not do it,yeast spraying can also be appliedafter noticing the disease, which should inhibit its further development.
Many people, however, ask themselvesdo yeast spraying workand are they safe at all? They are safe for sure, because I sprayed the tomatoes myself and nothing bad happened. However, this is not yet proof that yeast spraying really works.

As it turns out, scientific research has been conducted on this subject and there areopinions on the use of yeast in the protection of plantsagainst fungal diseases. The influence of selected yeast species was investigated both in terms of plants in the field and in terms of the protection of fruit and vegetables in storage facilities. Positive effects were obtained, among others. in combating the fungus Botrytis cinerea, which is very commonly attacking plants, the cause of the disease called gray mold, as well as fungi causing alternaria, rhizoctoniosis and moniliosis (brown rot of fruit). The list of the results obtained and the research carried out can be found in the work of Ms Monika Kordowska-Wiater Yeast as plant biological protection factors (University of Life Sciences in Lublin, 2011). "
How does yeast spraying combat plant fungal diseases? The mechanism is quite simple. Yeast is also fungi, but harmless to crops. After spraying, yeastscompete with pathogenic fungi for space and nutrients that pathogenic fungi need to thrive. Additionally, they stimulate plant immunity. As a result, pathogenic fungi cannot find a suitable environment and food to multiply, and our plants remain he althy.
A similar mechanism is commonly used in plant protection. In gardening stores, we can buy the biological preparation Polyversum WP. It contains the fungus Pythium oligandrum, which not only competes for nutrients, but even parasitizes pathogenic fungi. Its action is therefore even stronger than that of yeast. And although in this example we are not dealing with yeast, it can be seen that one fungus can be combated with another fungus.
Alsopreparations for plant protection are produced on the basis of yeast , e.g. in the USA, Canada and Germany. Unfortunately, those that I was able to find are not currently available in Poland. It's a pity, because Boni Protect Forte from Germany, based on yeast, could be bought from us just a few years ago.
Nevertheless, it shows that theuse of yeast to protect plantsagainst fungal diseases is not something new or unusual. Therefore, I encourage you to performyeast spraying on tomatoes and cucumbers !
We do not havepreparations for plant protection based on yeast in Polandbut there is another natural remedy that works on a similar principle. It's Polyversum WP.
This natural preparation contains the beneficial fungusPythium oligandrum, which is a parasite of many species of pathogenic fungi. It inhabits the root zone of plants, eliminating pathogenic fungi through competitive action. At the same time, Polyversum WP stimulates plant growth by introducing phytohormones, phosphorus and sugars into them.

Polyversum WP can be used for watering tomato and cucumber seedlingsagainst soil-borne diseases such as: phytophthora, gangrene of the base of the stem, fusariosis, sclerosis rot.In this way, it prevents gangrene and dieback of the seedlings. For this purpose, 5 g of the preparation are dissolved in 10 liters of water. This amount is enough to water 5 m² of vegetable seedlings. It is recommended to make 2 such waterings at intervals of not less than every 10 days.
Polyversum WP can also be usedafter planting tomato and cucumber seedlingspermanently. Then we water these vegetables in the amount of 100 ml of liquid per one plant.
