Coordinate cultivation: naturally and effectively

In organic horticulture, the interaction of species is often used to protect against pests and diseases.Plants, by releasing certain substances into the soil or air, thus deter those insect species for which they are harmful or unpleasant. Therefore, in the vicinity of plants that we want to protect against ants, it is worth planting species that these insects do not tolerate.

The plants that most effectively repel ants are all species of mint. Especially peppermint (Mentha piperita) has an odor that is extremely unpleasant to these insects. Another plant that ants hate is rosemary - a strong smell repels them. The species that discourage ants from visiting include: mugwort, garlic, chives, petunia, mugwort, anise, chervil and lamb's lettuce.

In order to protect rose bushes, compose them with fragrant clumps of lavender, which ants hate, or bright marigold flowers.

Accompanied by vegetable patches, you can plant marjoram, thyme or coriander - spice plants that will discourage ants from settling in the area.

Mulching - immediate effect

If we want to limit the ants' access to specific beds or plants, we can mulch the beds or the passages between them with plant leaves, the smell of which discourages ants. The best leaves for this purpose are tomato, golden and tansy leaves.

Plant preparations - easy and cheap

When reaching for measures to fight ants, we do not have to choose chemical products. Nature itself will come to our aid. Let's use common weeds from fields and meadows by preparing our own means to get rid of unwanted guests from the garden. We can prepare infusions, extracts and liquid manure from them, which are extremely effective in fighting pests.

It is also a good idea to sprinkle the paths and anthills with baking soda, cinnamon, anise, pepper or coffee beans.

Gray soap is a well-known ant repellent. On its basis, it is easy to prepare a solution with which we spray pests. Spraying should not be done while the plants are flowering.
