Comfrey is a very nice ground cover plant, but due to its high spreading power, it should be planted carefully. It blooms between April and May. Its flowers have a tubular structure, depending on the variety, they are creamy white, pink or blue.Comfrey is one of the oldest medicinal plants. It has been cultivated for over two thousand years.
Comfrey grows to a height of 25 cm. Its leaves are oval and tapered. They are covered with fine hairs and are usually green in winter as well. Strongly growing rhizomes quickly gain new areas and give no chance to weeds. Once planted, comfrey will be difficult to remove in the future.
A position in the shade or partial shade in a fertile, clay-humus substrate is ideal. If we guarantee the plants sufficient hydration, the cultivation can also be carried out in a sunny position.
Comfrey can easily be propagated by division - either in spring or fall.Early or late autumn plants can also be propagated by dividing the root.
Comfrey is easy to care for and, except for the short-term bouts of rust, hardly ever infested with disease. Plants that grow too vigorously should be trimmed with a spade.
Comfrey can be planted between trees and shrubs in front of fences. It looks good in large natural gardens where it can grow freely. Less expansive is, among others new blue flowering variety 'Goldsmith'.
Direct contact with comfrey juice can lead to skin irritation caused by harmful alkaloids.
