Winter pruning of chokeberry (Tip)

Table of contents

Although aronia bushes have recently appeared in Polish gardens, they already have many supporters. Dark red and often almost black fruits contain a lot of valuable anthocyanins and vitamins. The chokeberry bush is an exceptionally easy-to-grow shrub, but it cannot be left alone.Unprimed bushes begin to grow excessively and lose their typical spherical shape. As early as 5-6 years after planting, exuberant plants can reach quite large sizes and a height of up to two meters.

Another disadvantage of uncut shrubs is their excessive density. Too many shoots means that few flower buds form among the thicket of leaves. Due to the shaded interior, the largest number of blueberry clusters grows only in the upper part and at the edge of the bush, and the center does not bear fruit. Even if fruits appear there, they are still small and sour.In order to restore the desired size of the shrubs and rejuvenate them a bit, it is worth carrying out the so-called renewing cut.

The basic principle of this treatment is to replace old, not very productive shoots with he althy, young growths. To do this, select the oldest 2-3 branches and cut them with a secateurs or ball quite low to the ground. They are easy to recognize because they are thickest at the base.In this simple way, the chokeberry bush will become looser and more illuminated. This will be conducive to the establishment of flower buds in the coming season and will improve fruiting.
