Fragrant pea Lathyrus odoratus is an annual climber that grows up to 2.5 m.Thanks to the tendrils, which are the tips of the leaves, it attaches itself to supports. We like it for its nice-smelling flowers, set in loose clusters on quite long and stiff stalks, developing from mid-June to September.
It grows best in sunny places, on calcareous soils, rich in nutrients and sufficiently moist. In dry soils it blooms shorter and not too profusely.Seeds are sown in early spring, in March, but they can also be sown in batches every 2-3 weeks, even until the end of June, thus extending flowering.
It is best to place them in points every 5 cm, in two rows 15-20 cm apart.Once the plants have sprouted, they need to be pushed apart by 15-20 cm between them. The flowering period of the peas can be accelerated by sowing 5-6 seeds into pots with a diameter of 10-12 cm at the beginning of March, which we will place on the window sill in a warm and bright room - seedlings will appear after a few days.
When the pea shoots reach a height of 10-15 cm, it is a good idea to nip them over the leaves to make them branch out.The plants should be planted outside after hardening at the end of April, then they will bloom at the end of May.
