Sensitive dessert grapevine (Advice)

Table of contents

The dessert grapevines grown in Poland usually come from warmer regions of the world, therefore they are quite sensitive to frost. 'Shuyler', 'Arkadia' or 'Alden' are one of the many dessert varieties that produce delicious, sweet fruit, but at the same time require careful care. Many of them are greenhouse varieties that can also be grown in the ground, but we must provide them with adequate protection, especially in winter.

Remember that dessert varieties are also more demanding in terms of growing conditions than wine varieties.Low temperatures are the greatest threat to shrubs. It happens that unprotected young shoots freeze and die in frosts of several degrees. To avoid this, immediately after the shrubs enter the dormant period, cover the sensitive parts of plants.

The most important protection is to cover the base of the trunk. This is where the noble variety meets the rootstock. A proven method is to make a mound around the bottom of the bush.We can use sawdust, shredded bark or even soilThanks to such a cover, even if all the above-ground shoots are completely cold, new shoots will quickly grow from the protected base and we will rebuild the bush.

A recommended way to grow vines in home gardens is to cultivate them on a warm wall of the building. In this case, we cover the entire wall with a thicker white fleece for the winter along with the vine shoots spread over it.
