Spring division of perennials (Tip)

Table of contents

The division is done in early spring, when the soil is already thawed.Depending on the year, this date falls on the second half of March or the beginning of April.Strongly overgrown stumps are dug up, brushed off the excess substrate and separated, as needed, into two or more parts.

Usually the carps are divided into 3-4 parts, but from a strongly developed carp, for example, algae, you can get up to 20 young plants. When deciding on such an intensive division, however, you should take into account their slower growth and no flowering in the same year. You can split the carps with a knife, spade, pruner, pitchfork or simply tear it apart.

The separated fragments are planted in a permanent place at the same depth as they grew previously, the soil around it is carefully pressed, and then the plants are watered abundantly.Depending on the growth strength of the species, 1 m2 are planted 3 (4) to 20 (25) plants. The shorter species should always be planted in front of the flower beds, the tall ones are best planted in the background.

In addition to species of considerable size, the so-called specimen (solitary), such as giant gunnera, pampas cortaderia or willowleaf sunflower, perennials should be planted in groups of several to a dozen. Their irregular arrangement will give the impression of naturalness.
