Wicker decorations in the garden - how to weave them

Table of contents

A beautiful weeping willow grows in my garden. The last time I trimmed it, I had many thin twigs left. So I decided to weave a few decorations for the garden from them.

Weaving wicker baskets

Two baskets were created first - a smaller one and a larger one. They are effective and ecological flower beds for bulbs and rock plants as well as for the periwinkle.

Wicker supports and frames

I used smaller pieces of wicker to make narrow trays for annual flowers. These unusual pots also mark the path to the place for a bonfire.Behind the benches by the hearth, I placed wicker arches in a semicircle, which will support nasturtium and decorative peas next year. The slightly larger arch also serves as a pergola for a young climbing rose. This is obviously a temporary solution, but for now it is enough and looks nice.

Wicker also served as a casings material for freshly planted thuja.

Willow not only for amateurs of wicker

The best wicker for plaiting is obtained from the following species of willow:

  • american willow (Salix cordata 'Americana'),
  • basket willow, hemp (Salix viminalis),
  • almond willow (Salix amygdalina),
  • purple willow (Salix purpurea).

Hemp varieties are more and more often used for energy purposes as a cheap fuel.
