Early spring domestic perennial

Table of contents

Hepatica is tri-lobed, partially evergreen, smooth leaves and multi-lobed flowers on stalks 5-10 cm long.Flowers of the hepatica develop in March and April, and in mild winters even in February, before the appearance of new leaves, which do not grow until the end of April.

Plants of this species have purple-blue flowers and varieties come in a variety of colors. There are over 500 varieties, and they differ not only in the colors of the flowers, but also in their fullness and structure. It is worth adding that the petals grow during flowering.Flowers (not all varieties) close in the evening and on cloudy days.Hepatica is a shade-loving perennial (here it is found in deciduous forests), so in gardens we plant it under trees and large shrubs, and we can also plant them in shaded flower beds and rockeries.

Hepathes look good next to squares, primroses, snowdrops, lungwort, hoofers and hellebore, as well as among the wood anemone and fragrant violet. They require a humus substrate, quite moist, with an alkaline or neutral reaction. We propagate them by dividing older clumps after flowering, and single-flowered varieties - from fresh seeds.
