P:I want to find out about the tree that grows in my garden. It's called paulownia tomentosa. When the plant was small, it had frozen for two years, but grew back from the root in spring. Now she is 6 years old and I know it is blooming, but I don't know how many years later.
O:Paulownia tomentosa is sensitive to frost, therefore it is most often found in south-west Poland. It comes from East Asia. With us, it can reach approx. 10 meters in height.Young plants grow fairly quickly - winter shoots appearing at the base of the trunk, most often after freezing, can reach approx.2 meters.Older specimens grow much slower.
Flower buds form already in autumn and hibernate in a layer of red-brown kutner, therefore the plant blooms only after mild winters. Temperature drops below -15 ° C cause all flower buds to freeze, and shoots below -20 ° C also freeze.
The flowers appear in May, before the leaves develop. The paulownia plant can be grown for its beautiful leaves, treating it as a shrub, and pruning its shoots just above the ground every year by forcing the plant to sprout strong shoots. These trees should be planted in a sunny location, completely sheltered from the wind.
Requires fertile soil, slightly heavier than average, slightly acidic. They need a lot of moisture in spring and the first half of May, later - less.
